This is not just a problem in the USA, in Canada we've been having major problems with getting taxes to pay for all of the social programs. We get taxed on our income, we get taxed on what we spend, we get taxed on our property, we get taxed on our investments -- there is a government hand out every time we do anything that involves cash or property.
Here we've been seeing our discretionery income shrink every year to practically non-existant; the everyday folk don't have enough cash to cover their living expenses, let alone go out to dinner or the occasional movie every once in a while. And at the same time we've seen our service levels go down -- increased wait times at hospitals, fewer things covered by Medicare, the introduction of user fees for basic health care.
Pretty soon this whole system will collapse because the poor just won't have anything left to give the government. It's the same old story -- the rich billionaires who actually run the show keep bleeding the poor people dry of all their cash and morale so that they can keep making more money for themselves.
