    DNS updating is now instant?

    I'm confused,
Several months ago, when I made changes to the name servers for the domains it took 12hours or more for them to be active, but now it's instant, how come?

Is it just me or something happened?

    Thanks

Back in 1995 you could submit a request to modify your name servers and still know you have 2-3 days to continue working on the site because it won't be up anyway lol

verisign changed this 2 or so months ago
95% of your traffic gets rerouted within minutes at most

some registrars have not updated when they send in the changes to the registry and in those cases it takes about 12 hours, but this is rare.

                            Here's why:

First, remember that the DNS system that converts the IP address of your server into an alphabetic name is actually it's own network. If one DNS server doesn't know how to translate a particular domain, it asks another one, and so on until the correct IP address is returned.

The .com registry has "root" servers. Basically, a place that lists each domain. Prior to September of this year, these root servers updated themselves in batches every few hours, not immediately.

Now, the .com registry adds records dynamically and thus, a domain name becomes operational immediately.

The caveat is that some 3rd party registrars (usually the cheap ones) still process their DNS records in batches to save on processing and bandwidth costs.

                            I hope that this helps,
