Will Linux Desktop take a major share of Micro$oft Windows market?

Now that Linux Desktop 10 enable users to play videos and MP3 music files, upload digital photos, and exchange music and image files with an iPod and digital camera, will the "public at large" use instead of Windows?

I'd love to see it, but i dont think it will happen.

IT managers allways think you wont get any support for linux and get good support from M$ .

All my machines are linux too btw

I don't think the general public contact M$ support when they have a computer problem, they just return the machine to the store or call in a tech guy to fix it!

Your're right but many stores are no longer offing OfficeSuite with computer as they used to and they might start offering Linux Desktop with OpenOffice and Firefox to cut cost...

There's more potential in governments switching to cut costs.

if i had a dollar for the amount of times that i have heard "linux is going to steal window users" i would be rich by now

while linux might get a few ppl that are interested , it wont take a huge chunk out of the market , windows is used at most work places , so when ppl get home its what they are used to using , the portability of it

no one really buys windows anywhere , (well atleast all the ppl that i deal with) they all have pirated copies that they have gotten off ppl that brought a brand name pc

bigger companies mostly have inhouse techies to do all the work , very rarely will they outsource to 3rd parties

while linux might be free , at the end of the day to convert business over to linux costs a shitload , teaching ppl new stuff , the work downtime while ppl are off at training seminars

Windows will always be the main os to the general public.

I had linux on my laptop for awhile, but my screen was not fully supported and everything was a little fuzzy, so I switched back.

Totally amazing though how you can delete a week's worth of work with several keystrokes when you forget which directory you cd'ed into ;-)

It's been doing that for years... in a few words: slowly but surely.

A major share no. All you need to do is look around at how many big business's still use old software written in freakin fortran or cobol. It's financially stupid to upgrade from these ancient programs.

Now for a second consider how many ten's of millions of computers are running windows, or business's that rely on software written for it. There's no way another o/s will take away a "major share" of the market, its almost impossible.

And just because some distributions of *nix is free don't make any difference, there is still billions of $ in labour and downtime costs that people always fail to take into account when considereing if another O/S can make a major impact.

We'll be working with M/Soft for a long time yet.

I don't think that would happen, at least in the near future. Though Linux Desktop has relatively stronger features than Windows, the latter reigns to be the most popular among homes, offices, companies, etc... Not only in the US, but most especially in the 3rd world countries. People there know nothing but Windows.
