i was just playing with my friend...he had a bishop right next to my rook perpendicularly and he said i couldn't kill the bishop with my rook. i thought rooks could kill anything up and down or left and right? the bishop was right to the left of it...
any chess players?

hmm, well he said it was some weird circumstance where i couldn't take it...i dunno wtf...Originally posted by RayYes, rooks can take anything up down, left or right.
and then i also got confused with how the king could take pieces. how can the king kill?Comment

He probably said that so he could cheat and beat ya!
And correct, rooks can take up down left right.Comment

The King can only move one space at a time hence killing whatever is next to him without putting himself in check.Comment

oh i know why now, i think it was because if i moved the rook to take the player it would have left the king vulnerable to be taken.....Comment

I have not played in years, however the king has the abilty of a rook(up down, left right) and the abilty of a Bishop (side ).Originally posted by StickyGreenhmm, well he said it was some weird circumstance where i couldn't take it...i dunno wtf...

Yes the king can kill in any direction but only one space at a time. Sounds like it probably was the fact that taking his bishop would have left your king vunerable and in check with one of his other pieces.Comment

If you killed the bishop by moving the rook, resulting in putting your king in a "check" position(queen, bishop for example) then...yes, he is right. But only if that WOULD be a DIRECT result from moving the rook.Last edited by Nembrionic; 01-30-2006, 05:23 PM.Comment

Yes.... The king can kill diagonally, vertically and horizontally.
the catch: it can only move one space at a time
sounds like the queen is a stronger piece than the king

I also agree Knights are a very important pieces, but I like the Bishops for the long attack ability that can be easily overlooked by an opponent. The Queen is good but I mainly use her for a distraction while setting up the attack with other pieces.Originally posted by 69pornlinksin my opinon the knight is the most powerful piece on the board i love to play without my bitch...and damn well too
I love Chess, but haven't had the chance to play it in ages.Comment

most players i played with love that queen and value her and think the game is over once she's off the board..Originally posted by Peter_ANYwebcamI also agree Knights are a very important pieces, but I like the Bishops for the long attack ability that can be easily overlooked by an opponent.
