Whenever I see anyone saying "your kids shouldn't see this" or "we shouldn't shield our kids from the horror" etc I always wonder if anyone has asked the kids what THEY want, and what THEY know.
Most people don't seem to realise that kids don't suddenly switch from being kids to adults the moment they reach 18 - most kids are far more intelligent than people give them credit for...
