Am I outdated for still using tables? Whats the advantage to CSS?

I'm still using tables. I hear all this great stuff about CSS but nobody really elaborates. Is it easier? How would I be able to incorporate it with my Photoshop/Image Ready Sliced layouts?

Would somebody be able to show me a site done in CSS? I spent all this money on Dreamweaver I'm wondering if I should invest the time into learning CSS.

I think the bad rap on tables is way over hyped.. I have a few number 1 spots on good keywords with sites using tables. Designing an entire site with CSS is way too much trouble IMO.

trouble because we haven't mastered it, is more efficient in the end.

tables arent outdated by any means, will take some more time for sure, but start checkin out css, i think it'll dominate in due time.

After you get the hang of it, it's generally easier then using tables, although occasionally your not left with much of a choice due to retarded browsers like ie not rendering shit right. In the end you get a cleaner end product, and it's easier to maintain since if you do it right you can change the entire layout, globally, just by editing your stylesheets.

I used to use a shitload of tables in just about everything, once i got the hang of css / divs / etc... i haven't really looked back. Sure it's a bit confusing at first, but after a while you'll just appreciate not having to write out all of those tr's td's rowspanning and other bullshit that comes along w/ tables.

CSS is the future. I don't think for graphic intensive sites like adult, it will be going that direction anytime soon though. The advantage of CSS is the different platforms and media that it can be viewed over (PDA's, Palms, etc). I don't think it tables are outdated yet, I'd bet there are many mainstream designers that disagree with me. As for myself, i'm not profecient enough for it to be profitable, so everyone gets tables It took me about 8 hours to make my first all css layout, something I can do in Photoshop and DW in 15 mins. Thats just bad business.

Agreed. I've bought all the books & studied all the online resources over the past 2 weeks or so because I want to get a really good grasp of it.

I am doing the web manager right now using CSS, I must admit starting it, is hard, but after you get down your look and what will get what, it gets easier.

                    CSS is the future.

But it won't hit it big until CSS3 is adopted.

Microshits IE lags in complience, but Firefox should be making them scared.

A hint of what CSS can do.....

....you can have layers by using a z-axis.

Imagine creating a single menu button, and just lay the varying text over it using html and css.

It is an logical solution when optimizing webpages - it reduces the your HTML/code by replacing redundant tags with a few lines within the style command.

What major sites are using a 100% CSS layout? I'm interested in checking out how it all works. I've honestly not given it very much consideration.

But its a site about CSS standards

CNN, ZDNet etc are developed by some pretty hot developers (I assume) and they all use tables

What do they know that we dont?

                                          They're just lazy.

CNN could be done in just css and would look exactly the same.

If you look at some examples (the image header one for example)
                                          here:

you start to see some real potential for css. To update a site instantly by changing a couple of css files rather than hundreds of html files is the key to css.

i am pretty sure most seo geekazoids will tell you the higher human readable text to code text ratio is better for search engine optimization. with css you reduce the code text quite a bit, even more if you stuff stuff (huh?) in an external css file. here is sitepoint spam article for css book that surprise, is chocky full of tables made in css http://www.sitepoint.com/article/uto...ing-tables-css they have a free download lesson that i got that i read when i can't sleep...

Hiding seo text is also easy using css.

The surfer won't see it, the spider will.

Use a linked css file though. You should only used linked anyway 'cause then you can just change the one file instead of "find and replace"

                                                    Don't reply. Let it die.

Thanks all. I was almost going to run out and get myself a book on CSS but fuck it, I'm having a hard enough time learning PHP. Guess I'll be sticking with tables until it goes the way of the Frame.
