Depends on a lot of things...

Black and white, color, or both? What are you trying to monitor? How is the lighing like in the areas you want to monitor? Do you need PTZ type cameras? Do you plan on recording the cameras or just live monitoring? Do you need net or network access to the video?

Honesty, there are a lot of things to consider, we need to know more about what you are trying to accomplish.

Hit me up 346940591 and I can give you a better idea what to look for if you don't want to post it on the board.

edit - Also need to know what general price range you are looking to be in.

B&W is fine, Live monitoring, no need for net. Lighting will be supported by floodlights in area. cost is always a concern, but $ isnt a priority if the quality can be justified. We are really just looking for a way to monitor our location without having to look out teh window all the time.

What kind of distance would you approximate to the farthest out camera? And will you have local power at or near the cameras?

Also, are the cameras purely for your security or do you want others (tresspassers) to be aware of them as a deterent?

No, they are not, but most of the products they offer on that site are Wal-Mart quality. I mean, come on, EverFocus? Hell, you can buy that crap at Sam's Club, so I guess they kind of are Wal-Mart.

Oh, and the covert crap they have on there is outdated and overpriced.

its always nice to have a deterant. we have a back alley that i would like to monitor. figuring on two cameras side by side will give a good 180 view of the alley. Same for the the front of the building would like to look up and down the street. also want to monitor who is at front door of residence, see whos ringing the door bell or talking to the intercom. would like a sixth camera to monitor a front desk/shiping reciving area. currently during teh day door remains unlocked, & anytime teh door is open the alarm system chimes indicating that someone has entered. This area is down stair from my office & its a pain to check & see who has arrived, when it might just be teh mailman or UPS guy.

You could get away with some B&W bullet style or case-style cameras with (depending on the range you need) some 3.6-8mm fixed lenses, some siames coax (carries power and video in the same casing), an 8-camera power supply, a B&W 8 channel multiplexor, and a basic monitot (or old spare TV).

If you want to see who is at the front or rear door, find a multiplexor with alarm inputs and program the mux to go full screen with that camera and tone or chime when the alarm input is trigered.

i guess teh big thing is it would be idea to monitor any of teh cameras using any of the 8 TVs in the building. its a multi level building with offices on the 2nd floor with my master residence on the 3rd. i want to check teh various camera views, from the office, kitchen or bedrooms without a separate monitor. the wall are open right now, so its teh time to run any nessicary wiring.

For multi-room monitoring, you could go with an audio/video distribution unit. Basically it's a box you put somewhere (usually the basement) and you run your camera feeds into it. Then out the other side you run your cables out to your TV's or monitors on a dedicated channel (like a modulator, channel 3 or 4 on your TV).

That's one neat way of doing it.

You could also go with an 8-channel DVR card that has LAN access built in. Then you could at least pull the cameras from any computer on your network or wireless laptop.

edit - The biggest issue you run into with multi-area monitoring is loss of the video signals. Even with video boosters the video may not be that great. Also, you can only have the multiplexor in one place at a time.
