AMD are the shit. I would never use intel. But thanks to Jesus, Oracle and Yngwie I learned something reading this thread.

Macs are the shit for design and graphics... video... no doubt.. I would never completly switch....

A CLUE 4 U
People who actualy believe the AMD hype are so funny.. AMD's reliabilty and strengths lie in all the wrong places or just do not exist. These graphs show AMD beating intel in 1 or 2 tests and when they do its by such marginal #'s you'd never notice.. Why sacrifice longevity for tiny speed gains?
Intel is a better built chip and the boards and chipsets have wider support and lifespans.
Reminds me of the whole rice burner mentality...

Blah blah blah...the fact remains that unless you do heavy video edit in which case, you should get a Mac instead , you'd be better off saving some $$$ with AMD.Originally posted by MrJackMeHoff

MrJackMeHoff... You're a fanboy.
I don't "belive the hype" I own Mutiple chips from both companies.
"Intel is a better built chip and the boards and chipsets have wider support and lifespans."
Wider support?
What the hell are you talking about.
Lifespan?
My old 1800+ XP system is many years old and has been running way overcloked (1.9G) without so much as a hiccup. In fact I've NEVER had an AMD chip die on me excluding some that I recived DOA and I've built over 20 systems using the A-XP line.
Athlons blow Pentiums away in almost EVERY gaming benchmark not "1 or 2" tests
http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/2004...4_4000-08.html
http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/2004...4_4000-16.html
(and toms hardware is slightly slanted twards Intel)
Yea if your not gaming and doing office related tasks ONLY then pentium might be the way to go.
But your bold "clue" about AMD is nothing but fanboy flaming.
price to performance ratio AMD takes this year hands down, but we'll have to see what happens next year becasue intel has announced the development of a new production process that AMD wont be able to match rapidly becasue they are still upgrading their factories to 90nm tech.
Intel has already been 90nm so they will be ready to move on.

I build machines all day long without using garbage amd's for half the price but nice try.. I guess its good for someone who is clueless.
AMD64 chips outpreform P4's in almost every task. Check out www.tomshardware.com , he's got some good tests you can educate yourself with.Comment

If you knew anything about hardware you'd know that a CPU's lifespam depends on the running temperature. AMD's are shipped with better cooling systems and run as cool if not cooler than intel chips now.Originally posted by MrJackMeHoff

Maybe not AMD chips 2 years ago, but today AMD definately has the better chip in the personal computer market.
I would know, i've got computers running both... and my AMD is always faster than the intel in every benchmark (even though the clock speed is lower on AMD's).Last edited by stev0; 12-12-2004, 12:18 AM.Comment

AMD has an advantage in gaming, but Intel currently has the edge (in single-processor systems) when software can take advantage of hyperthreading. I'm about to build a new video editing PC and I will use a P4.

Unfortunately the graphics card in the original posters system will not handle most of the newer releases. (they'd be playable but not enjoyable at @10fps) Buying a 9600 series card now is daft when you can get a 6600GT for a few bucks more, futureproof yourself, and (in comparison) literally triple or quadruple the performance.

They dont even show the prescott cpu's how old is this crap your using as your data?
Your comparing 64 bit to 32 bit cpu's? WTF program uses 64 bit 'sides a fucking benchmark??

None of those benchmarks are 64 bit.
And um.. prscotts? You could cook eggs on those fuckers. They sucked and would put out massive heat, even at stock,
Biggest intel flop in recent memory and you bring up "why isnt it on the bechmark"

And that article talks about STOCK temps then about a SLIGHT 5% overclock. Anyone can do a google search and find out the ass reputation of the presscott even among intel fans.
Uh... Then you probably don't know how to cool your racks and its funny that somone who "runs web hosting since 94" would bring up the presscott as an example of a good intel chip.Originally posted by MrJackMeHoff

Right now nothing uses 64 bit tech except some linux distros with hacks applied and the win 64 beta.Originally posted by Doctor Dre

Every program will have to be recompiled and altered take advantage of the extentions (but there might be some benefit from having just the OS use the extentions becasue I've seen some crazy encoding speed increases on 64 bit linux) so by the time your really gonna want a 64bit chip the ones out now are gonna be crap... but at least they will retain some resale value.
Currently its just a marketing ploy but it is also the first step twords 64-bit computing.Last edited by - Jesus Christ -; 12-12-2004, 12:42 AM.

Wow. WTF happend to my thread?
Anyways, KMR Stitch, I'm sure that you can find those parts for that price...
but did you include the moboard price and all the other little things that put together a full functinoning PC? I doubt it..
Oracle, sure the FX-64 is a better processor...and for the extra $250-400, it damn well better be...
That's why my PC is much cheaper... I've been reading through all your replies and it seems that you are very uninformed regarding the PC world. So please, stop commenting in this thread.Comment
