Anyone here or anyone you know ever have a heart attack and live?

I just got a phone call from my sister. My Dad has been having chest pains and shortness of breath for the last week or so. He is stubborn and does not like to go to the Doctor. I guess last night he got them so bad that my Mom forced him to go.

I guess the cardiologist is due in anytime to see him and look over his EKGs and stuff. The ER docs said that there appears to be some stresses on the heart and they are going to admit him into the ICU. Some kind of fluid surrounding the heart?

Did anyone you ever know have one (God forbid)? I'm just curious as to what is going on right now. Maybe what to expect. I don't know, just a little scared I guess. Dad is only 55

Lots of people survive a heart attack.
My aunt survive 3 and then a quad bypass
she is still alive years later.
And my dad has survived 3 strokes and 1 heart attack.

millions and millions of people have heart attacks and survive - David Letterman and Bill Clinton both had heart bypass surgery, they would have had heart attacks eventually if they hadn't.

i have an uncle who when was 55, he had a massive heart attack, doctors said it destroyed most of his heart muscle, once heart muscle is damaged it can't get better. My uncle Lou could have got very scared and led a very limited life, but he didn't, went into rehab in a big way and is still practicing law, running and skiing and he's now gotta be close to 70. Seen all four daughters get married and has a bunch of grand kids.

Even in the case of having a bad heart attack, if u get to a hospital fast there are drugs that can really help mitigate the damage caused.

it's very good your Dad is being monitored before anything has happened. they'll work him up and decide what is best for him.

It sounds like he has something called a pericardial effusion (medical name for fluid around the heart), so he might not have had a heart attack. Its good he is in ICU so he can get treated asap. He might need a bit of minor surgery to get rid of the fluid, or they may just use drugs.
