Best Ways To Clear Space on HD?

i'm down to 1 GB left on my HD - dunno how I got down to this low - i do have a ton of photo content on it but it's definitely not much more than 5 GB and maybe another 5 GB in movie files. it's a 40 GB drive and i have another one on the machine i use to store content but that's almost filled so i can't move stuff there.

Is there some software I can get that will show me where I should start deleting crap?

    thanks
I moved my sites to Vacares Hosting. I've saved money, my hair is thicker, lost some weight too! Thanks Sly!

Hard drive space is so cheap nowadays... Your time cleaning the drive will cost you more than a new hdd.
            Nothing here...

You can burn the content to disk and make at least 2 copies and or you can just go out and buy a new HD one that hooks up by firewire would be fine...

Delete all but your most recent restore point.

Use this program to clear out a bunch of hidden cache stuff.

From your Start Menu search for any folder named Temp and delete anything in it. Also from the Start Menu do a wildcard search for temp files (search for *.tmp) and delete anything you find. Also do wildcard searches for potential large file types, *.avi *.wav *.bak
You can even wildcard the whole computer by searching for *.* then sort the files by size to look for unwanted large files.

If you play games With Real Arcade the games are installed into a folder called My Games but the installer is left in
                  C:\My Download Files
It's a file that ends with .rgs and is as big as the game itself but a totally useless file after install.

Many other programs have folders where downloads store. A P2P program usually has a folder within it where downloads go but sometimes the temporary files are in another folder. Sometimes when you cancel a download the temporary file is not cleared. For example, you somehow lost a 10 meg download at 9 megs then cleared the download... there might be a 9 meg temp file left behind. Best way to find these files is to go into each program folder you have in C:\Program Files and mouseover each folder inside looking for huge ones. Investigate what's inside.

Look in C:\ and My Documents for "My downloads" type folders that various programs may install. For instance on my PC I've ended up with C:\My Download Files C:\MyDownloads and C:\My Downloads
In C:\ and My Documents also look for folders applications have installed such as My Games, My Music, My Received Files, My whatever.

For starters those tips should reclaim you a few bytes

this is what i'm doing now. thanks.

external drive hooked up with Firewire? u can run apps off it? i thought it wouldn't be fast enough - i'd just install another hard drive internally then and install XP on it too.

Delete everything in your temp folders, always clear you browser cache after you finish browsing, del all wav files.

You probably aren't using all the content all the time. You could zip/compress some of it.

But a new HD is a good idea. Techbargains.com has been posting a lot of deals recently.

move all the files you dont usually use but want to keep to an extrenal hard drive. that'll free up more than enough space.

How the heck do you work with only a 40Gig drive?

You can buy 200 Gig drives at good prices now.

Time for an upgrade. That's your solution.

Upgrade! More disk space! 40 gig drive is a waste of space now. Basic stuff now is about 120gig, upper end about 300gig... no shortage of space when you do that.

Second step is add a good speedy DVD burner, and burn stuff off to disk that won't get changed. Figure out 4 gig per disk, it won't take many disks to empty your stuff right out.

Heck, I have 240 gig of drives sitting on my desktop not plugged into anything right now. ;-)
