Guitar Players - In here please

I'm looking to buy a decent entry level acoustic guitar. Does anyone has some suggestions on brand or anything else to look out for?

I've played trumpet for years but I want to get into guitar so I have very limited knowledge as to what to look for.

Ibanez is what I started with. Get a slim neck to start with, I found that easier to deal with.

If you have enough money you should go for a Martin & co guitar!
I have played guitar for 15 years, and always wanted one...

If you do not wanna spend that much money, brands as Morgan, Yasmine, Takamine, Yamaha, Gibson... All those are very good, and have guitars in all different price classes. Let me know what you end up with!

Fender and washburn have some decent low priced ones. and www.Samash.com sells Carlo Robelli guitars and they are real cheap. I dont know how those hold up but they do play nice.

The key thing is to get one that plays decent so you dont get discouraged fighting the damn thing all the time.

Carvin also has some cheap ones called the Cobalt series. They start out at $359.00 and Carvin makes some good gear.... www.carvin.com

go to a guitar store look around to see what they have, find something toward the low end that you like and feels right...then find it used and cheaper on ebay or a used guitar place, along with an amp...guitar, tuner, amp, pics, new strings, cord for under $500...then a few years later if you are still playing you can upgrade

suggestion, when you are learning, find some guitar tablature sites and play along with some of your cds, that used to take hours of my time

the best way is to go into a music store play around with a few and see what you like. someone might love one guitar and someone else may hate it . i always hated the feel of kramers and people loved them.

I just bought my daughter a top end applause (by ovation) from musicians friend for 269.99. Wonderful guitar that will last forever. You don't get much better than ovation.

The others suggested in the thread are also good. I have a Takimine Jasmine that has always sounded wonderful and can be had for a low price.

Anyway, I found musicians friend http://www.musiciansfriend.com to be a good source for guitars at prices I haven't been able to beat in the local shops.

For a beginners guitar that still sounds GREAT, I'd go with a Seagull...http://www.seagullguitars.com/...they're pretty cheap, but the sound is still amazing...I love mine

Go to a store and try a bunch out - get what you feel most comfortable with and with what you can afford.

Depends on the size and strength of your fretting hand and fingers.

Ovation / Applause / Fender are good choices for serious beginners though. Stay away from Gibson, you won't be strong enough to play one at first.

Takamine makes good acoustics, even their cheaper guitars are better then most mid-grade ones (namely mid-grade Martins).

I want to learn, and the only way I will learn is if I have one in my house ready to go.

Mostly just Alternative, no hard rock or anything. Perhaps some jazz from time to time. Never country. ;)

I'm writing these all down and will have to take a look at them... thank you.

depends on what you consider entry level.

as mentioned above in this thread Martin & Co. as well as anything by Ovation are excellent choices. if you already know how to play i would just reccomend going to your local music store and playing different guitars until you find the one that suits you.

i personally have an Applause by Ovation (one of my friends smashed my much nicer acoustic while angry and drunk one night). It's a good guitar, costs roughly 300 bucks. Soon i am going to dropping like 1200 on a Martin though. Another friend of mine just got a Martin for about that much and it is an exceptional guitar.

Thats my baby right there. Make sure that the distance from your strings to your frets isnt too high for your first guitar. Most of the cheaper models have a larger distance, and it makes it even harder to learn. I shaved a bit of my upper and lower bridge to drop the height even more. Thats not a G series btw, its an older upper model. Ef541 I belive.

Well.. it would help insofar as feeling how your hand fits the neck.. how your fingers feel on the strings... They will be a little sore for awhile til they callus up a bit..

The size of your hands can make a different in what you buy.. See if any friends have guitars that you could play around with for a few minutes...

Neck widths vary on guitars...

I'd go with a not very expensive guitar if you've never played before, because u'll most probably will change the guitar when u play it good :-)

Begining Acoustic I'd go with Ovation or Epiphone.
Check out http://www.musiciansfriend.com they have TONS of deals on guitars for beginners. Once you figure it out, then go with something nice like a Martin or Taylor.

That isnt really true. You can always sell a guitar if you find you dont like it. Get something that is going to play nicely, sound nicely, and stay in tune. If you get something that has too much string tension and string height it wont be enjoyable to play, and you wont stick with it.

For best bang for the buck, I'd definately second mastermikex's suggestion -- Seagull Guitars. Very nice for the price.
