I'm not really a good designer so my input will probably be obsolete in this thread.
Anyway, my best work (coincidentally my latest) is probably the new tour I've been working on for http://www.jamiepeterson.com .
I use Photoshop.
Not really sure what you mean by "good pics".

By "good pics" he means stock photography, images you can use to build themes within the design.. see www.corbis.com
