While I agree 100% with your thoughts and anger, suing the accused won't accomplish anything. Settlements in Canadian civil suits are peanuts compared to our American neighbours and it's highly unlikely this teenager will ever earn enough money to even come close to paying it off.

Simply put, crimes involving guns need to carry severe penalties. It won't act as a deterent (young, poor people who rob banks, etc. aren't intimidated by doing time and it's well worth the risk in their minds), but it will get dangerous offenders off the streets.

Sadly, one of the issues is that youth in our city do not view the police as the "good guys". They have very little respect for authority and in the end, very little can be done to prevent these crimes - except locking those up responsible so there's no chance of a repeat.

Edit: If the news about the accused's short robbery sentence bothered you, this will make you far angrier:

"Accused gang member Andre Thompson had been charged by police 19 times before he allegedly opened fire with a stolen gun on Boxing Day shoppers in the middle of Yonge St.

But 15 of those charges were withdrawn when he pleaded guilty to only four charges in three separate incidents, court documents obtained by the Sun reveal. "
