I've found that keeping things clean really helps.
In my case, my Vaio was running really hot for a while and when I opened up one of the vents underneath to see if anything'd gotten in there to stifle the airflow, I was appalled to see a veritable carpet of dust and cat hair that'd collected over the course of a year and a half from sitting on the coffee table (we have five cats, shut up
).
Clean means cool.
