http://www.geocities.com/tomhanks00/castawayinfo.htmSmith and screenwriter William Broyles, Jr. both served in the Marine Corps in Vietnam, and while they had not known each other during their service, they met years later. Broyles approached Smith about FedEx's possible involvement in CAST AWAY. "He asked if we could help by allowing them to use the Federal Express system as a backdrop for a very interesting theme," says Smith. "It was an easy decision."
FedEx gave the production an unprecedented level of support. From the earliest stages of development, key FedEx personnel worked to assist the filmmakers in a wide variety of areas from conveying corporate philosophy to contributing key technical resources.

fedex paid nothing
http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1238220,00.aspFederal Express didn't pay Tom Hanks to deliver its packages, wear its uniform or shoot scenes in its offices for his hit movie Cast Away. But the company sure is glad it granted Hanks' request to do those things. A FedEx spokeswoman estimates that more than 54 million people worldwide have been exposed to the FedEx brand because of the movie, which she says amounts to several million dollars worth of advertising.Comment

its not hard to believe that FedEx didnt get paid (out of pocket), the exposure from the film is enough to bring in millions alone. i would have let them use my company for free advertising in a movie with Tom Hanks, too.
not to mention, half of the movie involves little-to-no talking. so your mind is 'piecing' the movie together, saying "FedEx" in your head while reading the packages that first washed up to shore.
brilliant marketing, IMO.

As u said, the advertising and branding was great...therefore u'd "think" FedEx shelled out some money to have there name used.Comment

I've read in a few articles that Wilson got in for free too. Very hard to believe, but...
They said they asked for a few balls, Wilson sent some footballs or basketballs (I'm not sure) but then later the film producers asked for volleyballs.
