BTW...of course they made the joice to join the military and of course they know they might be "alone" on Xmas but neither of these have anything to do with expressing appreciation for the sacrifices made by them 365 days per year in peace as well as in times of conflict. Xmas just seems like the ideal day to express ones apprciation. Yet once again if you and/or others do not have an appreciation for their sacrifices...then so be it...just move on.
