Biz thread...if a .com name you want is taken, should you...

If a .com name you want is taken, and .net is taken too, should you get the .us extension to it?
or should you just add "online" to it, so you can have the .com name?

Adding onto to an established domain name is asking for trouble. How long do you think someone could get away with aolonline.com or playboyonline.com before getting a C&D?

If the name you want is not a developed site (it's parked) contact the owner and make an offer. Otherwise come up with another name.

Contact the owner and ask for the price.

It all depends on what the domain is (i.e. trademarked or not) and what you want to do with it.. If you want to build a domain that has value to it for selling later, then you will probably need the .com.. If you're just going to use it for SE sites, feeders, something to plop a bunch of galleries on, then any extension is fine.

im not retarded enough to add on to a name from a big major company, but there are a lot of domains that are taken and are either blank pages or have fpas on them, and thats what im talking about

Contact the owner...and expect some ridiculous out of this world price back.

A brazillian race car driver has the same name as me. I failed to re-register (myname).com. A couple of months later when I wanted to put my portfolio online I contacted the assholes who registered it...they want 3k for it.

I think .com is where it is at. If you don?t have the .com and want to grow with the name you will sooner or later run into problems? or it will cost you a good junk of money.
