Interesting. The Fraser Institute is fairly reputable. I believe their statistics for Canada are pretty acurate. You're right that they don't seem to agree with the Australian Goverment.

We only have around 300 homicides a year in Australia so that makes it easier to manipulate the statistics because short term fluctuation can look worse when taken out of a long term context.
An extra 30 homicides a year, which isn't really much could represent up to a 9 or 10% rise.
Just always go the source for statistics. The census people or any official bureau of statistics, whose sole job it is to collect the official figures.

How about access to unlimited quantities of high explosives?
You can call these red herrings if you like but I'm just interested in your concept of freedom.
This sounds like a slippery slope to me. I say freedom is good, so you ask if people can own large weapons and explosives. Frankly, I don't care if my neighbor owns a bazooka or not. If he really wanted to kill me, I'd be dead by now. I think it's a bad idea that only the government be allowed to own weapons. Restricting weapon ownership is what tyranical governments do. You will find that every tyranical government restricts the citizens from owning weapons and non-tyranical governments generally do not. I digress back to my example of Switzerland and the large numbers of military rifles in the homes in that country, yet they have one of the lowest violent crime rates in the world.

Nobody ever said that gun control would end violence but it has done what it was supposed to do and that was to reduce gun crime. And that is what it has done.
Nobody in Australia lives in fear of gun violence.
I don't fear a fist as much as I would fear someone pulling out a handgun.
Curtailing "gun" violence doesn't do you any good if "knife" violence rises. Why the focus on "gun" violence anyway, why not just violence in general? That's what I found so suspicious about that Australian government website, there was such a huge emphasis on "gun" violence while violence in general was being completely ignored.

Pardon me, but DUH! What about deaths from knives, baseball bats, boards with a nail? You've focused completely on "gun" violence in this discussion and completely ignored violence in general. You've not addressed the question I've posed probably a half dozen times now. I'm willing to concede that gun violence is probably down, but what about violence in general?

It's just too easy to misrepresent statistics.
Then, your story could be one of those "short term fluctuations" and murder might be rising in the long term?

What the fuck does that have to do with anything?
Canadians run around all the time bragging about how their country is the best and so in fact do Germans and the French and many people from many other countries.
You seem to have very selective hearing, and again what the fuck does it have to do with anything?
So what Americans are very proud people, that is something to be ashamed of?

I can tell them that I work with the mentally retarded.
People should realize what these statistics are based on.
Given the facts, anyone can make his own best countries list, with using a certain perspective.
Do your prefer military power? Do you prefer high GDP? Then maybe America would be on top of your list.
Or do you simply wanna be in the country you were born in? Are you patriotic?
It's all a matter of preference.
Do you choose to be arrogant whenever a subject like this comes up? Fine, it just shows your character, and you are free act whichever way you want.
It's just stupid to try to force others to believe what's best and what's worst, while it's actually all relative. But as Einstein said, human stupidity is infinite, and we got a big chunk of it on GFY.

Sorry I am not going to apologitic to people who hate my country and explain to them that if they hate my country so much then to leave it alone. Everyone who is here right now slamming our country is in some way benefiting from it, you think thats right?
I don't look down on other countires or cultures, I do not think America holds some monopoly on good things or good people, but I do LOVE my country and I have something to say to the fucktards that continue to bash America just because its the "popular" thing to do. If that makes one arrogant then I suppose I am arrogant.
Pretty simple concept if you ask me, if you hate it so much, don't deal with it. I don't go to countires I do not like and complain to them constantly, or their message boards.
But I guess there are a lot of Americans like you who would rather bow your heads to the rest of the world and beg forgivness for all of America's sins, as if no other country has any black marks in its history.

Ya noticed did you??
Wonder why we don't have webmasters from other nations come on GFY and appear so utterly dumb and ignorant??
Of course, the chances are they were educated better, even in third world countries.
I sure wish someone would just shoot the stupid bastards and keep em from breeding - they sure show a very unfair picture of the US and cast doubts on the majority of decent US people.

YOUR KIDDING ME!!!!
Read the thread all the way through, and also consider this a boiling over from the previous 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,001 threads and remarks against Americans on this board.

OO great, another self-hating apologetic American who feels we should apologize to all of the people who hate us.
Funny you should bring up education, when its obvious you don't read.

This is absolutely priceless, your targeting me for all of my "ignorant hate" and your response is too, "shoot the stupid bastards and keep em from breeding."
Sounds like a response someone from Mississippi would have about a certain race of people in this country. Yet your trying to hold yourself in higher regards than these "stupid bastards."
Now shall we compare degrees since you brought up education?
I am working on finishing my Masters in Political Science and when I am done with that I will go on to earn my Doctorate, at which time I will then go to on actually work in politics because I really do fear for the democracy in our country and I want to do everything I can to work within the system to help to preserve it and make it stronger.
Unlike most who would rather sit on message boards and bitch and whine and complain about it while being complete and total hypocrites in the process.
And I'll go ahead and give you a little glimpse into my political beliefs so you can see what a stupid bastard who should be shoot and kept from breeding believes.
I am Pro-Choice,
I am against the death penalty for any crime,
I 100% for civil rights for all people regardless of race, religion, gender, or sexual preference,
I also do not believe we have gone as far as far as we can in the fight for civil rights and we need to get it going again,
I believe strongly in the liberal democratic system of government,
I believe in economic responsibility,
I believe in a strong capitalist system, which also happens to provide help in securing the welfare of the less fortunate, (thats FDR, look it up if you don't know)
I do not believe in tax breaks for the rich,
I do believe in a Progressive tax structure,
I believe the government has a moral responsibility to see to it that all of its citizens have quality healthcare,
I believe in maintaining a strong military,
I do not believe in the war in Iraq,
I do not believe in using the military to bully other countries around,
I believe in maintaining a foreign policy that allows all governments to work together to find peaceful solutions to our problems,
I believe the best way to be a real patriot is to question your government and keep it honest,
I believe in campaign finance reform that gets rid of special interest groups and takes away the advantage of rich candidates with richer friends and allows average people to compete for political leadership in the country.
AND YES, when I feel that people are attacking my country I will stand up and tell them where to shove it when I have had enough, because I love my country as I am sure they love theirs and would not (or should they) appreciate someone doing the same to them.
It is evident there is a level of utter stupidity that ... it's not my damned fault *s*.. that this always seems to come from US folks.
I have no wish to offend you in particular - I just can't be bothered listening to some idiots with some disease. It's just a waste of time and falls into the mindset of a cross between the "communist disease" and the Third Reich.
Rest assured... anyone who knows me, sure knows I am not "impatient" with people - they have every chance to have their say and I listen very hard :-)

look closely, you'll see that US residents travel to other countries in slightly less numbers that the entire world's population travels to America.
considering the small % of the worlds population the US makes up, your silly statements are proven false.
America hating comes in many shapes and forms, even on chat boards.
Hey dumbass! We are not talking about the military here or outsourced "security agents" that travel the world to support dictators that Bush likes and hunt one dictator that Bush doesn't like anymore

Whevener someone says America is not the best country to live in, you and people like you label him as an American hater and start showing your arrogancy. And threads like this end up going downhill.

true. All men 18+ have a combat rifle and ammo at home. Me too (if i can remember where that thing is). Statisticaly theres 3 times in 5 years something happening with those rifles. 2 times out of three its an accident (children playing with the guns or similar).
but i think it also depends if the country has a working social network or not. I think it wouldnt be cool if all people in south africa are allowed to own a combat rifle.

You show your arrogance in every post you have made. You have not read a single thing I have said, only commented on what you THINK I said and that is far more arrgoant than anything I have done.
I have not one time lashed out at anyone who said America was not the best place to live, had you read any of this thread before speaking you would know that, I have lashed out at people who make stupid false statements about America and Americans.
You should learn the difference before you start accusing people of that which you are in fact guilty of.

Why don't you open a thread about "Hating America" and continue your discussion there. But of course I can't force you to.

I am not the one who started posting "Hating America" topics in this thread. Sorry but it would not make much sense to reply to a bunch of statements in this thread by starting another.
Maybe you could try reading the entire thing and not jumping to arrogant conclusions next time.

The ban on guns had nothing to do with the trends in other violent crime. If you look at the increase in assault soley from the time of the ban then yes it has increased, however you'd be totally erroneous to link it causationally as non-gun crime such as assualt had been on the rise for years before the ban on guns and it's just a continuation of this trend. Taking the rise since '96 in isolation is ignorant of the reality.
(CNN) -- Sheriff's deputies are investigating the killings of five hunters Sunday in northwest Wisconsin -- bloodshed apparently sparked by a dispute over a hunting spot. A suspect has been arrested.
"This is completely nuts," said Chief Deputy Tim Zeigle of the Sawyer County Sheriff's Department. "Why? I mean, five people dead because somebody was trespassing on property. It makes no sense."

YES! Why the hell not!
If I am trained, have no criminal record, and can afford them, I should be able to own them.
Why relegate their ownership to governments? We are the government, aren't we?
I have attempted to purchase bazookas, rocket launchers, SAM missiles, etc. When I get to the point of completing the deals, the weapons dealers realize I am a private citizen (not a government) and the deals get killed.
There should be NO weapon or weapons system, I should not be able to buy - period.

People who choose to have their lives run by government, are the same ones who need a wife or a mother to run their affairs. The Democrats and the Socialism system relies on these people to exist.
