running up in the stands = questionable, but still a FORM of self-defense, since "assault" by law can be something thrown and smacking you in the face
punching the guys who ran up to artest ON the court after the incident in the stands was over = clearly self defense, the individuals running up to Artest while he was ON THE COURT could only have the motive to do harm to the players or the situation, and if they had a weapon or knife, we'd all be singing a different tune...but the thing is, how in the FUCK is Ron Artest to know he DOESNT have a weapon?!? Artest didn't injure the man he went after, he grabbed him by the face and said "you throw something man? you throw something??!" and the guy said no. The only reason it ESCALADED BEYOND that was because the OTHER fans didn't just stand around and try to help the situation, they threw beer on him, and started socking him in the face. Fans created the situation, then PUSHED the situation, period.

Stern is a prick ass motherfucker. My therory is the Pacers are a small market team who are definite contenders for a championship, who just handed the defending champions their ass on their own home court. Pacers in the finals would be bad for ratings, so why not eliminate them while Stern has a chance to. That is the only reason I can think of for this decision.
Hell from all the sports broadcasters I have seen all have pretty much sided with the players. Yes, under normal circumstances a player going into the stands is totally unacceptable, but what happened in that game was certainly NOT normal circumstances. And Wallace the son of a bitch who started it all got 6 fucking games, that is just a total outrage.Comment

A reasonable suspension would have been 10 games at the most, for maybe Artest, Oneal, and Wallace, and maybe 5 for Jackson, I would have thought even that would have been a bit harsh. But Jesus the whole year and 30 games is just someone out trying to ruin the Pacers.Comment

As far as the suspensions.. they were deserved. If a PROFFESIONAL athelete cant handle heckling and having shit thrown at them from the crowd, then they should find a new line of work. Ever see the shit outfielders in baseball have to put up with?
As for Big Ben, he should be suspended for a longer period of time. I agree he reacted like 90% of the league would have after the hard foul, and he would have lost a game or 2 from that alone. But he continued to go after Artest even after he was laying down on the score table and then went on to encourage the crowds activity whren the punches were being thrown. Incuiting a riot is a felony in most states, but i doubt any chrges will be filed against him.
Cant suspend or arrest the MVP from the world champs can ya... would be bad for business and thats all the NBA is after all, one big business

Here's my question. If Artest hit the guy in the stands then he broke the law. I couldn't make out what happened up there. Somebody here said he simply held a guy and asked "Did you throw beer at me". If that's the case, I don't think he broke the law. Was it innappropriate behavior to rush the stands, yes. If he did not hit anybody up there, he should be fine and doesn't deserve to be out the season.Comment
