    Unmetered bandwidth?

What is the practical cap on an "unmetered" bandwidth account?

Any recommendations besides the one I found at the top of google, http://www.nuportalcity.com.

Well unlimited isn't unmetered. Unmetered means it isn't metered, you can do as much transfer as you can push. For example, a 10mbit server can be unmetered. Since 1 bit is 8 bytes, 10mbit pushed 24 hours a day for 30 days straight would result in around 3200 GB. So there is always a limit.

But what kind of plan are you looking for?

Don't go for "unlimited" or "unmetered" accounts. There is no such thing as unlimited bandwidth, and the typical "fair use policy" for that type of account will make sure it isn't enough for a big site.

          What he said.

I would stay away from unmetered. Most are an excuse for overselling. The worst I have seen lately is Nocster's deal for "100Mbit unmetered." From the few people I've talked to they are lucky to get 15-18MBPS out of it. Needless to say they are paying around $179 per month and it is Cogent bandwidth (get what ya' pay for)

Feel free to hit me up if you have any questions. I won't try to sell you a server or anything like that (unless you want me to ). I'm always willing to help!

We offer a 100mbps server (unlimited) basically means you get a full 100mbps link to your machine and use as much as you want. However, the price is several thousand dollars. Now if you're asking about companies that offer unmetered hosting for a several hundred typically they cap you at 10mbps, sometimes they dont cap the bandwidth but provide low-end hardware that can't do more than 20-25mbps ( say for example a Celeron processor or 512MB RAM). Sometimes the host provides decent hardware and a decent connection you may see up to 40mbps. But typically if the price is under $1000 for unmetered dont expect much in terms of support/service.

I think he was thinking more along the lines of hosting for a few dozen bucks a month, if you look at that link he posted.

Not recommended - too much downtime and dropped packets make the throughput suck.

Do not be fooled by the "Speed Test" on the site.

                    bandwidth

I'm currently with dreamhost and doing just about 300GB a month for under $20/mo total. To get to my next level, I probably need to triple that to 1000GB a month total (as frugally as possible).
