I just finished a complete content management system that allows you to manage multiple sites, automatically create thumbnails (although not high/low res), add news, add links, movies, stories etc and categorize everything with different status and / or different niche. This way if you run multiple sites you can categorize all of your content based on niche and quickly add new sites with this content. It will either rotate content for you or you can have it show all of your content. It serves all the content from outside your web root directory so no images are actually residing inside your website which allows you to upload to one place and manage it all there.
