Other than a very strange controller that as many people will hate as love I've seen nothing to suggest that the new Nintendo is in anyway being a pioneer. Besides which pioneering is pointless unless you are giving people what they want and Nintendo's problem is simply that they usually fail to do so. Nintendo give people what Nintendo thinks they want and not what they actually need in a console.
About the only thing allowing Nintendo to sell consoles in any kind of number are excellent (albeit 'cartoony') games and good branding of some of their games/characters. Nintendo games may not be cool but they are usually fun. However, that doesn't mean their hardware is any good.
As for the spring launch of the PS3...why on earth would that stop you buying an XBOX360? If you enjoy gaming you'd be daft not to own both
