Imho it sometimes takes extreme measures like that to instill in people's minds the gravity of their own personal responsibility to conduct themselves in accordance with established laws, rules and regulations. So what if he was mentally disturbed and his wife was shouting he was off his meds - it was their responsibility to make sure that never happened - especially onboard an airplane.
I have no sympathy for either the man or his wife. It was due to their lack of personal responsibility that he is dead tonight. Similarly I have no doubt that the ACLU or *insert other whacky activist group name here* will take legal action against the United States of America on behalf of this man on the grounds that shooting him somehow infringed on his right to free speech - just watch.
If you must, the whole story is here: http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/12/07/air...hot/index.html

Had the guy been a real terrorist and not just bi-polar off his meds, and the air marshall failed to act - well, we all know the results of that scenario.
Likewise, I blame the wife for not ensuring the guy was properly medicated. Too bad the guy had to die...but the air marshall was just doing his job from the sounds of it.
