The reasoning is very simple and the circumstances already known.

The wounded in that room had been searched 24 hours earlier and did not possess any arms/weapons. They were under guard already. They were dying, some already dead.

The other issue that remains is - why were these people left dying on a floor for at least 24 hours??

There is no question that they had arms or were any threat.

It was simpley a matter of a US soldier calmly walking up to one and pointing is gun at the victims head and murdering him.

There was no pressure by others to do this - he elected to act on his own behalf and murder a person.

The scenario you painted about shooting in the back is not even a remote possibility under these conditions.

Soldiers are not at fault here, at least not as much as their commander in chief .

Tens of thousands of people are dying in Iraq (100k+ deaths now, and the count is still rising), over 1200 American soldiers have been killed, every week people get kidnapped and beheaded, there are tons of rebels willing to blow themselves up if they can take out a few Americans with that, etc.
About twice as many American soldiers died in Iraq so far as police officers in the whole of America were murdered in the past 10 years.
