Decomposed male body found in store's chimney

BRIDGEPORT
The gruesome discovery of a man's mostly skeletal remains inside a chimney in the city's East Side on Thursday stirred up both sympathy and curiosity.
The Salvation Army Thrift Store at East Main and Shelton streets had been experiencing furnace problems for about a year, and a service company was called at 12:30 p.m., police said.
Repair workers then found a pair of feet and lower legs hanging from the narrow opening at the bottom of the chimney, which leads to the basement furnace.
"It appears to be the decomposed body of an adult male," said Police Capt. Lynn Kerwin, head of the Detective Bureau.
The body, which was in various stages of decomposition, also had bits of clothing hanging off it, according to reports.
It could have been wedged in the chimney for more than a year, and the man appears to have entered the chimney from the top, Kerwin said.
