What type of guitar should I buy?

I"m thinking to buy an electric guitar and amp to start learning how to play when I'm bored.

Any recommendations for a beginner? I'll probably learn reading tabs of the net or just fucking around.

All depends on how much you really want to spend, i've got 2 electrics now.

      Ibanez S470 DX

And a Platinum BC Rich Beast [In black]

If you've got the money go for something simpler like the Ibanez.. cause the BC is really a gig guitar.. and nothing else.

Your local music shop will have a starter kit for $150-200 which will include a bog standard guitar, 10w amp, case and leads.. if you're lucky a distortion pedal, and that is probably your best bet.

            The beast looks awesome

I'd probably want to spend 500-600$ for both the guitar and the amp.....Thing is I"m not sure what I can find here in Costa Rica of any quality

If you've never played, don't waste money on getting good equipment. You might end up not liking it and having the stuff sit and collect dust.

Start with the cheapest you can find and THEN get better if you work up to it.
                All the best to you

The above post is good advice.

Ibanez makes some good low-end guitars for around $300.

If you are serious about learning to play, you should get a decent guitar. I would recommend getting the nicest Stratocaster you can afford, and go cheap on the amplifier.

Find a couple of music stores there close to you and go play a few before you do anything. Guitars are like a woman... They are ALL different and if you choose a bad one you will never play it..... BUT, if you choose a good one you wont EVER want to put it down!!

You can ALWAYS order it from musicians friend but you will have an idea of what your getting after you test drive a few....

My first electric was a Fender Strat (tex-mex). Cheap at only 60 bucks off of ebay.

Dam thing sounded like shit. But then again I beat the shit out of it two.

I buy my guitars from this guy:
                                                    http://www.chrisguitars.com/
he's always got new stuff coming in, sometimes you find a real gem. Got a good return policy too. And he takes trades. I've been trading up for a while till I finally have a kick ass real Les Paul.

Inexpensive guitars are no fun to play, and sound like shit. People always say, "Get something cheap first, and move up later if you like it." That is Bullshit..a crummy guitar that is impossible to play will destroy your confidence. All $200 guitars are pure crap from my experience.

Don't spend less than $300 bucks on a guitar. Get one that is set-neck construction and string thru body bridge. Schecter, ESP, Ibanez, Dean, all make nice beginner guitars in the $300-400 range. Get something that looks cool!

                                                                          I would recommend this ibanez

More expensive amps are for playing in bands and stuff (worry about that later). An excellent begginer amp is something simple like this $100 crate http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/...se_pid/487782/ If you've got a little more money buy a $200 line6 http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/...se_pid/482255/

The crate is a basic amp with distortion channel, clean channel and reverb. Perfect for a bedroom beginner. THe line6 has a bit more power and effects like delay and phaser etc. The line6 will be more fun to experiment with but both are cool to start out

                                                                                  Palmer Deluxe

Started some online tutorials tonight and have learnt my G, C and D chords pretty easily. Fingers still pretty stiff though, guess it will take practice everyday to loosen them up.

Anyone know though, when learning should I have it plugged in and the amp on? Right now it sounds pretty bad without using the amp......but could just be the brand or the fact I havent tuned it yet.

There's a Guitar Center on Tropicana Avenue just about 5-10 minute drive from the Vegas strip. It's right next to Walmart so you can't miss it. They've got all the stuff I suggested earlier and an excellent selection of Schecter diamond series guitars

Bullshit, that's a cheap ass neck and head on that axe. That makes me wonder if the price is entirely the design on the body. If you want to pay an extra $350 for a design, on a $150 guitar, be my guest.
