    Registering 'iPod' domains..

    I read in another thread that Apple is going after domains with the word 'ipod' in them. Is there any truth to this? Any known case so far? Links to it? There's some nice 'ipod' domains available for reg, but I'm having second thoughts about it.

              I realize that Apple has to protect its trademarks and legal properties, but the company seems to have gone overboard in the process. As we reported last week, Apple and Google have teamed up on any AdWords subscriber, preventing them from using the word ?Apple? in any AdWord campaign. And last month Apple ordered several online iPod accessory vendors to stop using the word ?iPod? in their names or URLs.

              Apple's legal team this month is reported to be focusing on a group of unauthorized iPod and accessory Web resellers, demanding they cease from using the Apple-trademarked iPod name.

              One UK reseller which called itself iPod Essentials is now in the process of changing its name to MP3 Essentials after Apple took legal action, citing trademark infringement.

              "[Apple] has requested that the iPod accessories supplier cease trading under its current name and hand over the iPodEssentials.co.uk domain to Apple," Pocket-lint reported. A posting on the iPod Essentials Web site provides corroborating details.

                  i dont see why they couldn't go after you its the same thing if i start a site with

                  pepsiandairek.com

                  the name itself is trademarked. says so right on the box. ( i read mine to make sure)

                          Ok thanks for the heads up everyone. Was just wondering seeing as there's so many 'ipod' domains regged, some developed sites I found were even using a pic of the ipod in their logo. I'm gonna stay clear from 'ipod' domains and stick with 'pod'.

                              People sell iPod accessories, software, etc.. Airek. They market books, used ipods, etc.. on Ebay, and more. There are many circumstances where it makes perfect sense and not meant to harm anyone's mark but to enhance it.

                                  I think it depends on the usage. We'll see what happens to FreeIpods.com and similiar sites. Plenty of free ipods adwords still in use. Or sites like iPodlounge.com which redirects to ilounge.com it looks like.

                                      Yeah - I went with the name "podies.com" just in case. Last thing I would want to deal with is building up a site only to have an Apple lawyer decide he liked it better and wanted it for himself

                                      You cant use the term ipod in any adwords campaigns unless you ask for an exemption.
