Overly cynical and incorrect. There are 3 or 4 notable companies that I'm aware of that do or used to do this kind of thing, and they're major assholes who shave the holy fuck out of every reseller and make their real money with the spam.
Think of major sponsors with big cash and big names and godawful shitty sites who you somehow never see their banners anywhere, and you'll know who I'm talking about. Most of them are in constant legal trouble and will eventually get what they have coming.
Anyone you see laughing about this - you think twice before you do any business with them. You think they'll happily fuck up everyone's computer with spyware then suddenly get all ethical when it comes to other webmasters? Now THAT'S something to laugh about.
