The United States has experienced a decline in the number of welfare recipients from a high of 14.2 million in 1994, representing 5.5% of the population to 5.8 million in June of 2000, representing 2.1% of the population. The number of welfare recipients in the United States has declined by 8.4 million, a decrease of 59.4% between 1994 and 2000.I post on GFY so that when people ask me what I do,

Let me clear something up: I'm from the Netherlands. Our social security system is large and in charge.
Over here, tons of young people who can't find a job they really like see welfare as a valid alternative to doing work they don't like.
I don't think people should starve if they really aren't able to find work, ofcourse. However, when people want money from the government, they should work for it, and when they are getting tax money, they should be on birth control.
And yes, those who really aren't able to work because of disabilities should get money. They do exist - I know some personally - and society has the obligation to protect the weak (weak, ofcourse, is not the same thing as lazy)./(bb|[^b]{2})/Comment

Over here, a single person without children on welfare gets $1000 a month, and that's not counting all the different kinds of subsidies they get.Originally posted by titmowse

well, to be perfectly technical, in texas one gets 260.00 in payment, about 260.00 for food stamps and if ya know enough to get hud, that's at most 400.00 per month for rent. as far as medicaid, i think it's four prescriptions per month and coverage for whatever medicaid deems coverable.Originally posted by punkworld

oh, and ya have to pretty much have kids to get welfare. they don't often dole it out to couples or single people.
i don't know so much about social security except that my kid qualifies. but we'd rather not go that routeLast edited by titmowse; 11-09-2004, 03:52 PM.I still love everybodyComment

So that's $1000+ in costs to society, or about as much as someone who makes $3000 a month pays in taxes.Originally posted by titmowse

When such an amount of money is spent on people who don't actually need help but are too lazy to work, that's an insult to those paying for it./(bb|[^b]{2})/Comment

welfare isn't supposed to be a lifestyle. it's designed to help people get back on their feet.
the sad part is that all the different agencies in the US don't work together. the welfare folks won't tell a client that they qualify for free job training. well, they did qualify until bushco cut the funding for the job training partnership act.I still love everybodyComment

I don't assume that those on welfare are lazy, I know that many on welfare are lazy. I have no real problem with society helping out those who really need help, I have a problem with those who are able to work but refuse the opportunity.Originally posted by titmowse

ok i was wrong about the defence its only 20% i figured i overexagreated that one but the social service budget is grouped with education which makes up 3.7% of the budget, even if half the money goes to education and half to all social services (unemployment welfare ect) thats still less than 2% of the budget spent on all social services

you should see california. all your stats more then doubled. they also get a certain amount per child over the top which is annoying. these poor familys, to an extent, have children to get a bigger check. i too am annoyed with these welfare familys who probably arent legal anyways getting handouts because they represent votes in a blue state. i cant even shop on the 1st-2nd and 15th-16th of each month because the store is packed with people who dont speak english, have 4+ kids and shoppingS cart full of expensive brandnamed products.Originally posted by titmowse

The title indeed was a bit too much of a blanket statement, but I thought my posts made it pretty clear that I'm actually referring to a specific group of welfare recipients - one that unfortunately seems to be the majority.Originally posted by titmowse

i was on welfare for a year and a half back in the late eighties. i went to school while on it and now i'm off it. it saved my life and gave me the opportunity to be a better mother.
My own mother has been on welfare for a short while when I was a kid, too. But she went out and got a job which was well below her qualifications, got a second college degree while also working, got a better job, etc.
On the other hand, there are people like my housemate's girlfriend, who is 21, doesn't like her job, has done 1 or 2 job interviews with other companies, is now convinced there is no other work available, and is considering quitting her job and going for welfare./(bb|[^b]{2})/Comment

while it's true there are many who are just lazy, there are also just as many on welfare who have no clothes to show up at job interviews with, no social skills to work with the public and/or no confidence or even education. There are also many that are mentally ill. What may seem like laziness to many is actually people dealing with internal demons that they do not know how to deal with let alone keep out of their work lives.
My mom has been on welfare for 20 some years because of mental illness. When she did work she just didn't feel well at all after awhile and had to either leave or be fired.
People on welfare also become part of a vicious cycle that is extremely difficult to break free from. being raised on welfare myself I struggled to break free from the cycle. I finally did by a last ditch effort and taking a job scrubbing toilets and polishing floors. it was only then that i became accustomed to work. to this day I still miss the freedom that job gave me.
you know those people on welfare who live in projects? many of them want jobs but honnestly feel they are trapped in poverty. they need clothes and a boost of confidence to get out there and help themselves.
Think about this the next time the united way asks for donations. Help can be given with the smallest of contributions. they help poverty stricken people get the clothes and tools they need to find a job.Comment
