He died penniless. Following the break-up of his marriage, he lived rent-free in a house owned by his ex, then moved to a health farm owned by one of his mates. The hospital and doctors who treated him in recent years all did so without charge.
It's important to remember that he was a player at a time when players didn't really think about the future. When he stopped playing, he stopped earning and given his well documented spending habits what money he had accumulated soon disappeared.
