How much would it cost for someone to make such a script. I can make the art. I just need the script made so i can slap it in a div and let the users go wild.

Wordpress is quite good for SEO, if you set it up right.

As for the cost of making a script like that from scratch... you'd probably be looking at $1000 at the very minimum, depending on how closely you'd want to copy fmylife's functionality. It isn't all that complex, but post/comment/user moderation, support for multiple moderators, etc. means it's a fair bit of work. That's if you go with a decent programmer. A cheap one might do it for a few hundred bucks.

Libertine is right, it's not rocket science, but there are ton of little details that chew up time... not many would take something like that on for under 1k...

Damn, hire me for your next project.

If you think that's a lot for a project like this, either you have very little experience with coding larger projects, or you are severely underpricing your services.

If you price yourself at $50 an hour, and charge 50% for code you've already written before, there is no way you can do a project like this *well* without going way over $1k. Remember, you also have to add countless little features like validation for all user input, email verfication, password retrieval, tracking comments per user, etc.

Scrap all the social features, and it becomes a lot cheaper. But with those included, $1k would be a really, really low price for a custom script like this.

Just go the wordpress route. That's easy to set up in just a few minutes, and it's entirely free.

I used to be a programmer.

You should avoid the low prices. Focus on producing the best quality possible, and set your prices accordingly.

Once you have a decent number of references and GPL scripts, stop doing the underpriced work entirely if you can afford to. The quick, dirty jobs often bring more hassle than they're worth. Low prices mean you'll be dealing with amateurs, and dealing with amateurs raises the chance of running into drama significantly.

Meanwhile, dealing with professionals means you'll be making more money for less work, and getting better references. Spend the time you save getting better at improving your high-level skills, and build up an extensive library of classes to save work on future projects.

In that case, advertising yourself is even more important. If more people see your products, more will use them, and if more use them, more will see them.

Also, consider writing a few small but useful scripts and giving them away for free. You can easily get a few hundred backlinks that way, which can greatly improve your sales. Just make it clear up front that there is no direct support for those scripts.
