They do lose cash on the hardware. Everyone always does except nintendo. Always being last to the market lets them pretty much break even.
For every game sold that they had nothing to do with other than letting someone sell it for the xbox 360 they get $8. That $8 figure was from years ago. Since games whent up $10 its probably more.
