If Sony waits that long they may lose their hold on the market... besides they want to launch asap before the 2nd & 3rd game-wave for XBOX 360 and definitely want to launch before Halo 3 has a chance to be wrapped up. If they give MS/Bungie too much development time to finish Halo 3, then MS will launch Halo 3 on the PS3's launch date and that will definitely have an impact on sales.
Nintendo is like a lost (under)dog right now. I hope they have something amazing planned. maybe MS will buy out Nintendo and reshape the entire gaming industry... very unlikely but would be amazing.
