Actually, thats how I started out, I just offered to do 2 trailers for free. People were impressed by what I did and thing just started off like that.
Smart people will give someone a chance, because that chance might lead to something MUCH bigger. Of course, you need to be smart about it, don't go giving your entire library to them, start with small projects.
When you have someone who is enthusiastic about something, its good to nurture them and let them grow
