Post counts do mean something.

It works like this on the boards:

#1: Personal experiences you and people you trust have with people count for the most in judging their character/reliability.
#2: Then comes industry reputation (includes sites). The Hun carries more weight than RandomPerson123.
#3: Then comes register date/post count. Someone who registered in 2001 is not very likely to be a complete newbie, and someone who has 10k posts made over the past few years is less likely to throw away his reputation and nick to scam you for a few bucks than someone who has made 10 posts over the past 2 days. Plus, post count allows you to see what a person has been up to.

Post count and a long-lasting nick both make it less likely that someone will risk his reputation and that someone has skeletons in his closet.
