          It's a learned US behaviour.

          You can teach the dumb anything and they will believe it.

          Part of the ... excuse the inappropriate word .... culture.. of the US is a need to hate.

          This has been used for any subject you care to mention - communism blah...

          Not that many DUMB US people have even the slightest clue about anything to do with liberalism - but this has been used as the "hate word" where there is desperation to find a label and enemy.

          For the less intellectually challenged, labels are easy - so again, they can appear intelligent by spewing one word - liberal.

          It's the American way and part of the values that are cherished.
