Speaking of HIV, can you believe Magic Johnson is still

going strong after 14 years of living with HIV? I saw him on TV not very long ago, he still looks healthy. I remember watching him as a kid Lakers vs. Celtrics. Magis vs Larry. He was an awesome player and he is still an inspiration. I know he is rich and he can afford the drugs to treat it, but it is still amazing to me how well he has lived with it.

If I remembered it right, I've seen him playing on a fund raising game the last three years with former superstars. I was quite surprised coz he still managed to show some of his moves there.

He must be inspiring to people who have HIV. I wonder if he's the longest living person with HIV?
I post on GFY so that when people ask me what I do,
I can tell them that I work with the mentally retarded.

He is an inspiration to many. I just hope there's a vaccine or an effective treatment soon. HIV can be 'managed' in developed countries, unfortunately, it is in 3rd world countries where treatment is needed the most.
              No sigs needed.

I believe the average time before HIV turns to AIDS is 15 years, so there is nothing special about him yet.

Everyone thinks his wealth is buying superdrugs that will soon be available to everyone. Fact is, he's knocking on deaths door and will probably be dead within 5 years.

I know someone who got it when he was 23 and is 41 now. He's in pretty bad shape.

Shit, that's some scary shit dude. I've seen pictures of HIV infected people and you'll definitely feel pity for them. Johnson is just lucky he's still doing good as of now.

I know a guy in louisville whos been positive for over 12 years. And hes rich. Coincidence? I dont think so. With the drugs t that are available, it helps ALOT being able to afford them.

Can't you be a carrier of HIV without getting AIDs ?

I mean, aren't they two separate things, though they are tied together in that one can lead to the other?

i have a good friend who tested positive in 1987, and almost surely got it in 1985. he's still fine - no wasting, no fullblown aids, nothing - but he does change his drug cocktails from time to time. and he's not rich at all *shrug*

Weird thing about the friend of mine who is HIV positive. His wife is also (met in a HIV support group) yet shes been all fucked up for years. The meds give her all kinds of health problems. But last I heard shes still kicking. Meds seem to have no ill effects on Ed tho

Did you see that the FDA is finally thinking about releasing HIVTests for use by the general public. More folks need to test, but just want to do it privately.

There was an argument against this regarding an individual finding out they were HIV positive while alone and without any counseling; i.e. suicide.

Yeah, I saw that. Pretty sorry argument, imo.
That may happen, but I feel that would be better than them infecting anyone else. Sounds harsh, but most people will do what they are going to do, whether or not they have counseling.

To give the power to the people to help them from becoming infected in the first place is a better way. Who knows if people will even use them? With the few people going around and (non)purposely infecting others, these tests could help prevent that(Only if people actually used them of course, like condoms).

Sure people can use condoms, but even they are only 85% effective if used properly.

I think it is important to have all available options. I can personally wait the ten minutes to see if the current play mate is going to kill me slowly or not.

Yep, that's fact. One of my best friends has been + for about 12 years and his viral load is virtually non-existent. But he's got it and always will, at least until there's a new therapy that actually eradicates it. I believe it's fact that in developed nations - and elsewhere with aggressive treatment programs - that HIV has become a manageable condition. Just goes to show that the squeaky wheel gets the grease
