If you don't like "its", why work with them? How about a little sensitivity with your potential content. Plus you show your ignorance by not treating her with respect.
The safe term is transgendered. You could have said you were sorry and claimed ignorance. And then asked what she preferred to be called. There are many sides to the transgendered community. I don't claim to know it inside out, but I treat all with more respect.
