    Healthy alternatives to candy?

Last year Halloween kind of snuck up on me, so I had to improvise, and came up with pea-kabobs. Just took some cocktail type toothpicks (with the pretty colored plastic on one end) and slid some Green Giant Green Peas on them.

Surprisingly, they were quite the hit. I went thru a can really fast. I ended up having to open up a can of peas and carrots and doing the same thing. While more colorful, they took a little longer to get rid of.

So, in a couple more hours these crumb snatchers will be coming around again, and I am out of peas and peas and carrots. I only have the standard toothpicks also.

As far as canned veggies, I have some canned beets, black-eyed peas, and black beans. I am not sure if I should skewer them together or individually. Maybe just drain the juice and skip the toothpicks altogether?

I have some instant oatmeal, so I guess I could roll them thru the oatmeal first.

    Any suggestions?

In my neighborhood, you would have woken the next morning to a ton of toilet paper and eggs.

    Spend you some brain.

Most parents I know wouldn't let their children accept any non packaged "treats" in this day and age. I suppose you must live in a fairly closely knit community such that they know who the crazy guy with the vegetable sticks is?

parents never come up to the door, they just stand on the sidewalk and smile . . . . I am not really sure what happens to them when they get home.

Besides, that is why I used the cocktail toothpicks, the plastic decoration on the end sounds just like wrapped candy when it hits the bottom of the bag

            That's a great idea.

I've been thinking on this year's dillema for you. Why don't you print out some motivational messages on small squares of paper. Ball the paper up on the end of the toothpick and wrap the whole thing in plastic wrap. In the dark it should closely resembly a sucker. It should also have the wrapped candy sound.

The fun part is you can make up a few messages that aren't so motivational but rather perhaps guidance for the parents of particularily troublesome children.

Sounds like what the John Birch Society used to do when I was a kid. That was a really weird bunch.

Toothpaste balls while we're at it.

Just squeeze a little toothpaste on a pan, let it sit untill it dries.

Well, it was another successful Halloween at Casa de Perro Malo.

I started thinking about the best stuff I looked forward to when I was a tyke (popcorn balls), so I came up with this:

I had some Karo Syrup (not sure why, just glad I had it here) and some instant oatmeal. I poured about a cup of the syrup in with a couple packages of instant oatmeal, and made a nice little paste out of it.

I then took my available canned veggies consisting of canned beets, black-eyed peas, and black beans, and drained the fluid out of the cans.

I then rolled the various veggies through the paste, and formed them into little veggie balls. They still lacked that "Halloween" look, so I dug thru the pantry and found a box of orange jello, so I sprinkled the orange jello and some black pepper on them.

I then wrapped them in Saran Wrap. They looked pretty good, and the kids seemed pretty excited to get them.
