ICANN Preliminary Approval For 2 New Domain Extensions

NEW YORK - Two new Internet domain names ? ".post" and ".travel" ? could appear online as early as next year as the Internet's key oversight board announced preliminary approval on Wednesday.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, in advancing the applications for postal services and the travel industry, said they were still considering eight other proposals including ".asia," ".jobs," and ".xxx." Separately, ".eu" for the European Union also is in the works.

ICANN said the decision on ".post" and ".travel" had less to do with relative merit and was primarily based on the level of technical and commercial details their sponsors were able to quickly provide.

Negotiations will now begin on creating and running the domain names. The process could take months, though officials warned that there was no guarantee the domains would ultimately be accepted.

There are currently about 250 domain names, mostly for specific countries like ".fr" for France.

In 2000, ICANN approved seven new domain names for global use, the first major additions since the Domain Name System was created in the 1980s.

But the new names, including ".biz," ".info" and ".museum," aren't as widely known or used as the more traditional ".com" and ".org." In addition, some Internet applications reject the new names entirely because they were programmed to recognize only two- or three-character suffixes.

The two names preliminarily OKed are different from most existing names because they would be set aside for specific industries and interest groups. Applicants paid $45,000 apiece earlier this year to have their proposals considered.

The Universal Postal Union in Bern, Switzerland, wants ".post" for national postal services, local post offices, business partners and stamp collectors around the world. Private companies that provide postal services, such as Federal Express and UPS, also would be eligible.

The Swiss postal union said a ".post" domain could ultimately link various electronic postal services now being set up at the national level, the way a British postal worker can deliver physical mail sent from the United States with U.S. postage. The organization envisions establishing up to 650,000 virtual post offices to let users access their local postal functions from anywhere in the world.

The Travel Partnership Corp., a New York-based trade group, seeks ".travel" for travel agents, airlines, bed and breakfast operators, tourism bureaus and others in the travel industry. It sees hotels, resorts and restaurants as among the suffix's biggest users. The organization believes having a distinct suffix will encourage more businesses in the industry to develop or expand their Web presence.

if they do you will be out of luck because your .xxx won't be the official registration

I think all these new TLDs suck ass and are a waste of time.

ICANN should vote no on all this new crap

Otherwise, why limit it at all? Why not just have every word in the dictionary as a TLD?

I would imagine that people are gonna be all over the .eu domains.

I kinda agree. I think that's where it's headed too. But releasing new extensions slowly generates more business for them.

                        KRL, isn't .travel already a New.net domain?

Don't you expect a chaos when this is gonna get approved.

I know, New.net is a joke and their doamins are accessible only by like 10-15% of internet users..but still I've read the current New.net domain owners saying they will sue the new owners, ICANN, the new operators or whoever...

( same goes for .xxx domain for sure )

ICANN and New TLDs - The $2,000,000 Question
ICANN missed the deadline for creating a plan for new TLDs.

Instead ICANN issued an empty document that merely re-expressed what we already well know: that ICANN intends to continue to act as the reincarnation of a Soviet-era centralized planning bureau that, without any justification based on technical need, imposes its own judgment of what the domain name marketplace should be rather than allowing free competition and innovation.

But there is another matter that the empty document fails to address: the fate of the roughly $2,000,000 in fees paid by TLD applicants in year 2000. There are about forty applicants who paid $50,000 each and whose applications have not been rejected and are still pending.

ICANN should either repay that money or should process the applications. Otherwise it is simply expropriation, or worse.

                          and this is also interesting:
                          Can TLDs Be Sold?

                          http://www.icannwatch.org

sforrest writes "The .coop sponsored top-level domain has been sold , including both the .coop domain name registrar business and the domain registry itself. Co-operative News reports that a company called OSG, or Oxford, Swindon & Gloucester Co-op, has purchased .coop from Poptel Ltd, which in 2000 submitted a successful bid to ICANN (in association with the USA's National Cooperative Business Association), to create .coop as one of seven new top-level domains.

Who is OSG? According to their website , OSG is a co-operative business venture based in the UK that "has five trading divisions. Food (the largest), followed by motor, funeral, travel and property. We also have a business futures division which includes a new childcare service." The sale - while it impacts a TLD that has just 8,000 registered domain names - raises some serious questions for ICANN:

new.net is currently selling total bogus , not real domains

I only buy .com's. Nothing else.

I started to buy some of the other extensions then back'd up and dumped them. I don't think the Net is at the point where there will be sufficient demand or use of any significance for anything but .com, followed by .net and .org and some very limited use of .tv and .info. And of course .gov.
