Data changed his appearance frequently during the show, many times to signify his age and appear more human. He grayed his hair, grew a beard, etc. While it appears he gained some weight in those pictures (the first is from 1987 BTW), the difference looks greater because of the clothing.

Well, TNG started as a traditional fall show - not mid season. According to TVTome, the first episode (Farpoint Station aired in September 1987). I seriously doubt they started filming more than 9 months in advance. Usually production starts during the summer.

I already do! Seriously, he did gain some weight during those 15 years (don't we all?), but not anything on a Commander Riker scale. In the first pic, he's just got his commander lycra on. In the second, he's got a ski-type outfit on (you can see the commander outfit underneath).

On a side note, Brent Spiner returns to Enterprise this Friday. It looks like he's playing some kind of bad guy in a 3 episode story arc.
