I have a good script and I want to release it to the open source community

I basically own a script that I would like to set up a webpage for and release with GNU license via sourceforge or something like that. How do I do it?

Basically just what you said. Sourceforge provides it all.

    Spend you some brain.

Package it up with a GNU license agreement (zip, tar, gzip, etc). Sign up for a source forge account, create a project, and upload

Why would you do something stupid like that? heh

Except for some rare cases, I don't think there is $$ to be made from releasing open source scripts...

Sure there is, if there is a community to back it and follow the development of it. People will not only donate money, but they will also donate their time for improvements... And on top of that, the support factor that some people will need can be costly at times... Installation/Tweaking, etc...

You're an idiot Every single post I read of yours shows that you have no business sense. The only way someone could make any money with an open source script would be by taking donations and in order to have any decent amount of donations you have to have a large, popular open source product such as pidgin, firefox, open office, etc. Not some script that he wrote in a few hours.

No you are idiot and you just proved that.I could go on and on with talking about people who earned huge money with their open source script, but enough will be to say firefox earned last year 60 millions and that was not earned with donations. And yes it need to be large and well know to earn good money but i didnt said "make a open script in few hours and earn shitload of money"as you stating. In shortly, you are idiot once again.

True, but it will take months to build up "a community", if it even happens at all... I think what usually happens the coder is enthusiastic, launches it, updates it regularly, has big dreams of becoming the next wordpress, and then reality sets it, no $$ is being made, he thinks "fuck this" and the project gets abandoned.... I think that's what happens to 95% of open source projects...

If you are doing it for fun, then I guess why not, could get lucky and make some coin... but I wouldn't consider open source projects a viable way to make $$$....

Sourceforge is kind of a cunt. I would recommend Google Code (svn) or Github.

Well i think for success it is best to target something new and unique, hard to success if your project looks same like 95% other projects.

No offense, but I don't think you have a clue what you're talking about. You provide a product for free, then sell a hosted service, support contracts, and even provide custom work for people.

It probably depends on what it is. If he's not making money on it now, what is there to lose though? The more code you have out there, the more your name gets in the wild to perhaps be seen by the right person. Who knows!

I do know that we've hired from the open source 'community' on a semi-regular basis. It usually starts with a "Hey, we need project X modified in Y manner, we'll pay for the dev work and the code can be released back to the community if desired". Then if that developer is good we offer additional work as well.

I would also agree though, that most open source projects are fairly worthless - you need to have a userbase if you expect to make an income from it in any manner.

uh, most of the open source companies actually developing their free product aren't the ones who offer hosted service, support contracts, and custom work, it's mostly 3rd parties FYI

I didn't say everybody does. If everybody did that, opensource would be highly profitable. Those with a clue, would provide those services I mentioned. I thought that perhaps you would have picked up on that, but I guess I need to state the obvious.

jdavis doesn't know what he is talking about. mrkris is correct. There are many ways to monetize an open source project. Haven't seen it done really well in adult, however.

Thanks for the input, I think I have a good idea what to do now. I basically paid to have this script created a while ago with exclusive rights but never really developed anything serious. It's a very well made and pretty generic script that can be used for several different kind of sites and I thought it would be cool to release something back to the open source community since I use a lot of that kind of software and scripts. As far as money is concerned thats not why im doing it.
