NEW YORK -- If Ashlee Simpson's stomach was upset Saturday night, imagine how she's feeling now. After she was busted for a "Saturday Night Live" lip-synch gone awry, her manager-father said the 19-year-old used the extra help because acid reflux disease had made her voice hoarse.

"Just like any artist in America, she has a backing track that she pushes so you don't have to hear her croak through a song on national television," Joe Simpson told Ryan Seacrest on Los Angeles radio station KIIS-FM.

"No one wants to hear that."

He insisted it would be Ashlee's live voice alone during her appearance on NBC's "Radio Music Awards" Monday night.

And he said she's never used the extra help onstage before.

Simpson had performed her hit single "Pieces of Me" without incident earlier on "SNL." When she came back a second time, her band started playing and the first lines of her singing "Pieces of Me" could be heard again.

She was holding her microphone at her waist at the time. Simpson looked momentarily confused as the band plowed ahead with the song and the vocal was quickly silenced.

A flustered Simpson made some exaggerated hopping dance moves, then walked off the stage.

The incident exposed what many consider an obvious secret: that some singers who appear onstage aren't singing live at all, or at least have their voices augmented by backing tracks.

"Every artist that I now in this business has had vocal problems at some time ? from Celine on down," said Joe Simpson, also father of Jessica Simpson. "So you've got to do what you've got to do."

He said it was his decision to use the tapes when it became apparent that acid reflux disease had swollen Ashlee's vocal cords. After consulting Wayne Newton's doctor, she received a cortisone shot to get her ready for the "Radio Music Awards," he said.

It was the band's drummer who pushed the wrong button onstage, he said.

Simpson was the talk of the Internet after the appearance.

"Go away, Ashlee," wrote one on her Web site. "If you wanna be famous for something, choose something you can actually do. Maybe you could get naked for Playboy."

Other fans leapt to her defense.

"Mistakes happen," said another posting. "You're probably all just jealous because you sit at home and wish you were a celebrity and then as soon as one has a mishap, you're right there to rub it in."

To add to Ashlee's indignity Monday, eBay.com was auctioning off her private cell phone number, which it said had been inadvertently, and briefly, posted on her Web site

That must have been embarassing for her.

Personally her music aint my cup of tea, but I just happened to turn to SNL 'just' in time to watch her fuck up...I felt bad for the poor girl...shes only what 19? 20? and today on the radio these 40 something radio djs were makin g fun of her....pathetic...I think more people need to think worrying about themselves sometime

She sang live.. it was decent.. but then she said to Carlson Daily that she was gonna linpsync at SNL because she had a laryngitis the day of her performance.. lol

As far as Saturday Night Live, who cares what the musicians look like? That show has been host to some of the ugliest raunchiest rock'n roll over the years (although also to pretty bands that fell short outside of the studio... I'll never forget the Go-Gos sounding like double-strength hangovers). If you can't sing live you really shouldn't be "performing" on a live show.

Speaking of Milli Vanilli, I saw them when they had the MTV tour with Julie Brown. 2 friends and I ended up right at front practically looking up everyone's noses. Those 2 guys really did a good job, had to be hours of practicing to tracks apparently recorded again by the original performer to make them sound different from the original album. Rob Pilatus (the one who killed himself) slashed his leg while jumping down from a monitor and bled pretty good. A couple of times he looked like he was getting a little woozy but they finished the performance. Because of the setup of the show it was obvious that some of the backing music was taped but everybody's vocals appeared to be live (ad libs, mentioning the city, etc).

It's funny. My friends and I used to joke about how each generation got "old" and didn't appreciate the "new" music and how we'd always be "hip". For a few years I was really afraid that I had become that "old" generation until I got online and realized that radio music really had turned to shit. Thank God for my http://launch.com station!... No blasphemy intended, online really is the only reason I've listened to any new music in most of the past decade.

That IS the pathetic thing about todays mainstream "music" scene and it's market.

The kids DON'T care. They only care about ONE thing...FAME....they dont give a fuck how anybody got famous....only that they're famous.

Wireless. I'm not saying they WERE playing - as they obviously weren't - it appeared that they were strumming along with the recorded track, but almost everyone uses wireless now.

Cord goes from the guitar to a transmitter attached to the guitar strap or the musician's belt. Few guitar players plug in directly anymore - and the ones that do will stop the first time they get 115 volts direct into their faces because of a bad ground, or when some asshole singer stands on their cord and rips the jack and/or endpin out of their classic Telecaster.
