People are verticle so most shots of people are better in 4:3. With all these cheap HDV cams flooding the market you will see tons of poorly framed and out of focus shots.
The problem is that everything is going widescreen so if you shoot your content on 4:3 then most people will still watch it "stretched" to fill their widescreen TV. So models end up looking fat and distorted.
So what you can do is shoot widescreen but frame for 4:3. You can just cut the 4:3 out of your footage for your web versions while you make a widescreen version for DVD. This is what is done in mainstream all the time.
