Sorry to hear about your dog, I am sure he will be missed in the family. You probably did the best thing. My mother took in a dog that didn?t like children from a friend. It turned out the dog didn?t like people except the one who fed her. We thought it was us so we found a new home for her and told the people to return her if she didn?t get along.
Six weeks later the dog was back at our house with even more behavioral problems. Rather than torturing the dog more with new homes, the vet and I decided that she was better of in doggie heaven.
For all you dog owners thinking adoption is better, some pet owners make the right choice. As cruel and hard as it is, putting down a pet is the most humane act one can do for a family pet if they know their pet won?t adapt.

Thanks Baddog, on another note I think you should have looked into other way's to "get rid of" your dog. My new cat was sick and just about died over the weekend and then I read you just killed your dog to get rid of him. Thanks I'm so glad you shared what a cold hearted person you are. I think I was one of the first to read this and didn't know what to say, thanks to Baddog he had to make me laugh.

Everyone knows you did not come here for attention, and we all know how hard it is to lose a dog. The negative reactions are from those of us who feel angry that you made a bad decision. There are pet rescue registries out there that go out of there way to find a good home for the dog. Hell theres even pitbull adoption and foster care sites all over the country. If that doesnt work then maybe as a last resort send it to a shelter. I know shelters are far from a sure thing now days but it would have been better then nothing.NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO-Darth VaderComment

About the shelters I agree and considered adoption and met with two families to which I had to come clean and tell them about her problems. I had a dog behavorist tell me she was a very strong top Alpha dog and that being thrown from one house to another could be very bad for her. She would feel abandonned. She was spoiled since day one and I was given the advice of two of the top vets here in Montreal to realease her and let her go. This was probably the most difficult decision I've ever had to make. I would never forgive myself if she spent months is a shelter feeling abandonned and then put down alone instead of with me holding her and saying good bye! So I stand by my decision it was the right one.

Hun, I am sorry about your lost. I mever had a pet, but I can imagine how sad it is for you guys.

And I spent thousands of dollars on her when she got sick last year. I would of sold my husband (just kidding Chris) to pay for the bill. I have two beautiful other dogs that are also very sad and confused tonight.Originally posted by TurboAngel

Boy, it's so easy to judge and attack someone...Something I never understood! Especially in such a situation. I guess that's why some of us are sucessful and some of us just come here because were lonely and don't have anything better than to hurt someone...Hey whatever makes you fell superior peeps! No hard feelings to anyone not everyone is educated and tactful!

So... people who agree with you are sweet and classy and people who disagree with you are losers with puny brains? Is it possible - just possibe, mind you - that you're wrong, here? You claim to have spent years rescuing dogs but you handled this situation like a casual pet owner who got tired of the responsibility. I have had literally hundreds of dogs, cats and birds in my life and they are like members of the family. One thing I know is that you don't have beloved family members whacked just because they are becoming inconvenient. There are always alternatives. I noticed your little story did not include anything about professional animal training or behavioral modification of any kind. You also don't seem to seriously consider relocation for the animal.Originally posted by Funbrunette
Raven consider the source of the comments! You're a sweetie and classy!
Don't get me wrong, I'm sorry you lost a friend and I'm sure you're genuinely sad about the decision you felt you had to make but I think your post would have been a lot longer if you had really exhausted your other options before having your dog put down.

First off don't think it was easy to post that, I was the first to read it. I feel that you had a loss but I was sick all weekend because I thought my cat was going to DIE, I just don't get why you couldn't do something other than kill your dog.
PS. Here's a pic.
Oh and my cat Traitor made this post.

I'm sure it was a difficult decision....I'm an animal lover through and through; but, if I thought one of my dogs would harm my 18 month old baby and I tried everything under the sun.....then, as sad as it would be for me...I would put my puppy down. I had to do it once with a stray....we cured him of heart worm....we spent thousands on fixing the broken jaw he had when some idiot hit him with a car...we took him in when no one else wanted him....a beautiful lab/retriever mix....and then he attacked one of my other dogs...because he thought he was protecting me during play time.....we have little shih tzus...and this poor baby just couldn't help himself....I have fourteen stitches and a weak left hand because of what happened with this dog....we tried everything to save him and nothing worked.Originally posted by Funbrunette
Raven consider the source of the comments! You're a sweetie and classy! Something lots of folks around here could use. We also tried for over a year with Casey and after seeking professional advice we made this difficult decision. Thank God I got my two other dogs to help me through!
The food dish....he protected it from all of the other dogs...we tried separating...we tried behavioural training...we spent so much money, we went without just to save this gorgeous dog that someone else through away......and still, he couldn't be saved. He went after my husband and that was that. Our vet, who was one of the best pro life animal activists I've ever met, walked us through the hardest decision we've ever made...and that was to euthanise....we consulted, we looked things up...we did everything and it broke our hearts.....to do this to an animal who never got a decent break in life....but, the thought of having him kill another human or animal was unacceptable, too.
We were caught between a rock and a hard place, for sure....to this day, it makes me sad that it came down to death for Fang......I don't regret the decision. It saddens me...I wish it didn't have to happen...I've been an animal lover all my life and I do understand that people feel strongly about these things...
But to imply that you're a killer because you didn't post all the gory details..well, it just doesn't seem right.Raven

I grew up in south Florida where you can basically adopt a stray dog or cat per day without even trying. Between the strays we adopted and animals we got from shelters and pounds, I didn't go a day without one or more pets in my house.Originally posted by baddog
hundreds? you own a Korean restaurant or something?

okay, I am truly trying to grasp the concept of adopting a new stray every day . . . . wouldn't you at some point have 50 or so animals at one time?Originally posted by SpaceAce

Seriously, this is obviously a subject I feel very strongly about. I understand that sometimes animals have to be put down. I also believe that this should be a LAST resort. I absolutely disagree with your decision, but does that really make me a loser? Did I call you a loser for your opinion? I don't think so. You can't come onto a message board and say that you put your dog to sleep because it was having some "behavior problems" (especially without explaining the entire story) and not expect to upset people over that! And you also can't sit there and call people losers with puny brains because they don't agree with you. That's just plain immature and closed-minded.
Like I said, I (and obviously many other people here) don't agree with your decision. I would strongly encourage you to at least try adoption first if something like this ever happens again. Somebody like me (who does not ever have young kids around and doesn't have other dogs) would have been glad to take her and at least attempt to get her back to her normal disposition. If all else fails, then and only then, should the option of euthanization be considered.
That being said, I really am sorry for your loss. You obviously did what you felt you had to do, and as long as you are satisfied that you made the right decision, that's all that matters at this point, right?See what's new at

It hurts, but I do stand by the decision FB and I made. I also thought about some kind of adoption situation, however what happens there is the dog goes to new owners, and the chances are high that she'll be right back at the SPCA in a cage, scared and alone.
To put her down is to save her from any future pain at the hands of new and unknown persons. I won't ever forget Casey. Good girl.Comment
