Anyone here homeschool their kids? How's it going so far? Better than public school?

All the kids in my neighborhood that were home schooled were missing some serious social skills.

Okay, I'll put that in the NAY column. Any other thoughts?

don't do it. The only thing kids will learn in school is how to interact with other people.

we homeschooled our kids for about 3 years and it was great. BUT you do have to keep them involved socialy with other kids. our kids did MORE than most kids who attended school...karate, soccer, baseball, boy scouts, etc. they were out of the house about 3-4 nights a week. AND they tested at the 99% percentile on all of thier state mandated exams. i think it can work out great, but you have to do it right and be comitted to it

I feel that it's best to send my kids off to school. For one, in school they cover everything which is great, plus like others say, they have that social interaction and get to meet/have friends.

Another thing is that I know for me, school is like a break time for me, I don't know if I could take having my kids home 24/7 365 days a year, ha ha ha.

90% of your time in school is wasted anyway. Homeschooling can't possibly be worse than public education, unless the parents are retarded and the kid doesn't have an ounce of self-reliance. As for the social aspect of school, I have no idea what you people are babbling about. Other than calling each other fags, guys don't really communicate at that age. If anything, homeschooling spares you from emotional trauma.

Say what you will, but the kids I knew who were homeschooled were a bit "off." There's no easy answer. Find some adults who were homeschooled and ask them.

If you make enough coin consider a private school as a happy medium. Homeschooled kids do frequently miss out on the rough-and-tumble of social interaction that helps them learn how to get along in the world. But public schools are frequently overcrowded and cater to the lowest common denominator, while tolerating outrageous levels of kid-to-kid bullying. Are there any private schools in your area whose educational approaches mesh with your feelings about education?

As strange as it sounds, I think that time in your life when you go through the process of "calling each other fags" or otherwise being immature is important for a persons development. It's part of the learning process. It's part of the process to eventually becoming mature.
I post on GFY so that when people ask me what I do,
I can tell them that I work with the mentally retarded.

I was homeschooled. It is both good and bad like most things. You do miss out on interacting with other people but if done right the kids will be smarter then most of the kids in public school. If it was my kids I would say do it till they were in about 5th - 7th grade. I was homeschooled till I was a sophmore. If you put them in school after they learn reading, spelling and math at home it will be a lot easier for them to pick up on other stuff because they have the basics that get skiped over in schools and they just hope you pick them up. (I know this because I have sisters that were in public schools part of the time.) It took me a few years after I graduated to become used to being around people after I started school. That is why I believe that it is better to put them in earlier then when I was. If you do this you have to be willing to work with them atleast 6 hours a day though. When I did go to school I had a 3.6 grade point average and no problem whatsoever with test or homework.

I would do it with mine - if that chance were available.
I don't think at 40 years of age I will have another chance to have a real family - for once. I am not against home schooling ... I just relayed a true story in my life. That's all.

I'm sure there's some statistic somewhere that says home schooled children are smarter, and I would believe it. But the thing you should probably ask yourself is, are brains the only thing that matters in life?

If I ever have kids, I'm going to find a good private school and then have them get involved in activities with kids of a "public school" nature. It sounds weird and I don't quite know how to explain it, but kids in private schools generally come from families that have money. Getting them involved with the public school aspect would show them that money isn't everything and isn't the end all.

Ok, enough blabbering. I'm confusing myself!

No ... I get some of what you are saying.
I was lucky to be in a public school system that at that time let me skip grades 3,6 and 9.

With home schooling the kids can progress at their own rate - but they miss the social interactions with others of their same age - a skill in life that may be just as important as academic ones.

I pay $8800 for my 5 year old to go to kindergarten, and I consider it money well spent.

I wouldn't do it. Only homeschool kids I ever met had serious social interaction problems.

Home schooling is for troubled kids and/or troubled parents. Rediculous.

My son played soccer with a lot of homeschooled kids and quite honestly, except for the fact my son was smarter than me by the time he was in the 3rd grade, I couldn't find anything wrong with it.

The kids got to learn at their own speed and there weren't wasted hours when they nothing.

There were groups of homeschoolers that got "guest teachers" (for example, a local meteorologists, doctors, vets, etc.), they went on field trips, had sport teams, etc.

All kids had the choice to go to "regular" school whenever they wanted. Some went when they were in HS and stayed, but several went and came back to homeschooling.

I spent a lot of time with these kids over 10+ years and certainly saw NO lack of social skills.

don't put your kid through home school. Kids need to learn social skills that come in very handy later on in the business world. Sure there are some people who may be some bad influance on your children but you can sort that out while they are young and you won't have to deal with it much when they are in middle school or high school.

I know a lot of people that are a "little off" and they went to regular school.
I am pro homeschooling. I am far smarter and better educated than any teacher out there, and I want to give my kid more than he/she could get in public (or even private) school.

Most of us in this industry are fairly smart people, therefore our offspring will have a high IQ.

Do you really want your kid to slow down to keep up with the pace of the rest of the kids in class???

when I was in school, my teachers had to keep me entertained because the other kids were still realizing what was going on when I had already learned it. It was boring! And I was lucky that I was educated in Cuba, where the school system is 100 times better than the one in the States, and where teachers do pay attention to their students, kids do not mess with each other, there are no drugs, violence, etc.

                                                              I vote for Home Schooling!

also, if you want your kid to have good social skills, just the kid in soccer, karate, chess, etc., etc...
The only thing that a home schooled kid will lack is the mean-ness of the HS kids that go to public school. And, if you want to fix this, push your kid very seriously into karate, that way nobody will mess with him/her.

See, two things come to mind. Firstly, I think part of growing up is being confronted with opinions that maybe outside of the norm for your family and deciding how to deal with them. Surely, that is limited when your parents are doing the filtering of what you learn.

Also, unless you have some outstandingly intellegent parent they can't possibly be educated to the level they should be in each subject in order to teach it properly. Sure in elementry school the very basics are the very basics but as they get older I wonder how many parents would be able to properly educate their child to an equal level in English and say science?

It was boring! And I was lucky that I was educated in Cuba, where the school system is 100 times better than the one in the States, and where teachers do pay attention to their students, kids do not mess with each other, there are no drugs, violence, etc.

They would also pool resources - if someone was an English major, they would teach all the kids English, Science major, same thing.

They learned the subject before they taught it. Homeschooling parents do the same thing.
