New GFY Search Server next week

The GFY search saga continues. The issue is that allowing searches of 5 million posts on a live database basically kills the performance of the board. So we created a replication server to do it on, but the search table keeps getting corrupted.

Anyway, we're putting new hardware and software for it in next week. Let's hope this fixes the search issues.

Limit access to people with more than 17,000 posts, or whose screennames begin with the letters A-C would probably help a lot

Before I worked in adult my last job included being the Database Architect and Project Manager for a business system processing 1,000,000 transactions per day. I've set up a few "report" databases with replication in my day. If you need anything hit me up.

This is exactly why I don't get all stupid and start bitching about things not working here when they aren't. Because usually right around the corner is Lens with a solution. Like the last time the search was offline for a few weeks, and everyone getting irritable and pissy over it..... then a thread appeared announcing there was that "newsearch"..... and all the whiners shut right up. Now again there are a bunch of whiners....

you'd think some of you people owned STOCK in GFY or something.

Baddog.... I like your idea. Lens, RAISE the bar to those with more than 18k, don't lower it. I could make a fortune paying a couple of employees $15/hr to do searches while charging $5 per search for people :D

Yeah, it shouldn't be by number of posts. That will encourage all these newbies and trolls to post-bot their way into the seach feature. Criteria should be only if you've been registered 6 months or more.

Simple solution that will probably get me flamed...

Charge a membership fee for upgraded GFY VIP Membership that allows Search ability and possibly other future features (private areas, marketplace). But other perks don't matter, Search does. Perhaps $15-$25 a year. This will help alleviate the cost of maintaining gfy functionality and hiring more silicon valley techies. GFY would still function normally so people who don't pay won't notice a difference. The Search feature is a vital resource we'll all use everyday so I don't mind paying to make sure it always works. Other forums successfully charge membership fees, GFY should too.

Plus all VIPs could get an exclusive sig / tagline that reads: "GFY VIP MEMBER" (obviously not important). You can give free memberships to people who have earned it (high or quality post counts) or deserve it. I'll be the first one to pay for it.

If you decide to do it, please put all signups under my affliate id.
