I absolutely LOVE carving pumpkins! I would do at least ten and use them to line/light up the path to the candy ... I honestly think more people liked the pumpkins as they would take pictures and even called the local news to film them once or twice.
If at first you do succeed - try to hide your astonishment.

Do you freehand carve, or use one of those little kits?
I've used those, and can do okay with it. But I couldn't freehand a design.
Outside of the tradtional triangles for eyes and nose, that is.

I always create my own designs. Anything from Elvis (which was unbelievably popular) to gargoils and werewolves .. each pumpkin has a design on each side so it takes me a good week to do 20 creations.
I've never used a kit but I do design on paper first then use a toothpick to outline it on the pumpkin.
