I'm just about hurricaned out for this year. But is it wrong to admit that I kinda want to see it go to the Greek alphabet??? Only one more to go.

No thank you. I think there has been more than enough devastation this year

All it has to do is hit tropical storm force (about 30-35 mph??), and we'll have it. It doesn't have to make land anywhere.

All these 5 day track projections have proven themselves to be just that, projections.

The only certain paths are within the 24 to 48 hour window as we've all seen.

As it stands now it should hit North or South of Naples on the West coast and then deintensify over the everglades a bit and cruise over the East side of South Florida.

If we're lucky it will get steered enough South from the westerlies that it will miss Florida completely. But I'd say the Keys are going to get it for sure and the Bahamas will also since they'll be in the North East quadrant either crossing through or as it turns North up the US East coast.

I meant the next one. They don't use x,y,z so we're out of names now. It goes to the Greek letters. The next one will be tropical storm/hurricane Alpha (I guess), which will be a record.

That link he posted said Wilma is 150 mph now. You might want to rethink the bring it on part, lol.

holy hell... it went up to 150mph in the last 3 hours. We're gonna need to buy extra beer for this one. If this island gets a direct hit from that. Expect to not see me online for about a month... that is how long it will take to get power back. Our power comes from Miami.. 140 miles away.

Fucking hell... i just noticed the gain.. (see last post). I've been through 2 cat 2's this year... they are actually fun. ... but i ain't staying for this one. If Key West gets a cat 5 direct hit.. i'll have nothing to come back to. We are a 2x4 island. Most building here can only take a 3.

Yeah, you guys have been lucky this year and just missed some major damage. I'm up near the panhandle and we've only had to deal with power outages. If it hits the keys as a 4-5, everything will be wiped.

FL is the shit .... when it's not the months of June-November. LOL.
Most people get shit damamaged cause they either live in dumps, dont' prepare, or freak out. FL is above sea level (most of it).. so it's really just the wind that fucks things up. Board up your shit, tie down the patio furniture, and wait it out.. simple as that.

Because, the facts be known, very few people actually die from Hurricanes. Property damage you can fix or replace.

                                                Andrew only killed 24 people.

And when you consider the direct hits its really not a large number. Southeast Florida has only had 5 major hits in 150 years.

Most people get shit damamaged cause they either live in dumps, dont' prepare, or freak out. FL is above sea level (most of it).. so it's really just the wind that fucks things up. Board up your shit, tie down the patio furniture, and wait it out.. simple as that.
You don't "wait out" a Cat5. Cat5 is mandatory evacuation time, because few free-standing structures will survive without major damage. At Cat5, a hurricane is, essentially, a giant tornado many miles wide and will rip through a city like it wasn't even there.

If you live in a concrete bunker on high ground, kick back and enjoy the ride. If you live in a wood structure of any sort and are in the way of a cat 5, prepare to kiss your equity goodbye.

                                                    Andrew only killed 24 people.

And when you consider the direct hits its really not a large number. Southeast Florida has only had 5 major hits in 150 years.
Personally, I think the Katrina deaths due to flooding should be counted in that. They died as a direct result of the water generated by that hurricane; it seems awfully arbitrary to not include those.

Actually you can't count that, because it was the result of human engineering design failure on the levee system and poor emergency management on the part of the local and state governments, and lack of prioritization by the Federal governemnt to fix the levee despite decades of warnings.

you dont' need to tell a FL boy about hurricanes... especially if you dont' live here lol. For us, the tourist are evacuated first, then if it's bad enough, it's mandatory for residents. My house can take a 5... 2ft cement walls, base, and ceiling struts.... but very few structures in this city will. Key West is old and historic, 90% of it will be gone, and the island would be inaccessable for 4 months or more.
If it remains a 5, and gets within 50 miles from Key West.. i'm packing my shit and booking it.

I agree that all those factors played into the severity of the disaster, but ultimately it was caused by the storm.

It'd certainly be a more stark statistic if categorized under 'deaths due to hurricane' than if categorized under 'deaths due to incompetant fuckwits in government too busy lining their own pockets to give a fuck about the little guy'. I suspect the number of deaths caused by that dwarf most any other measure.

The winds would pick up on Saturday and rage through the night. Conditions would start clearing on Sunday.
