I think it's cool. He shows that you can make something like that work to a degree. If he put more time into it who knows.
Wouldn't surprise me if the army didn't try something like that.
However, four metal tentacles attached to your back would weigh too much in real life BUT I remember way back in the early 80's or late 70's a lab had a device like Ock's arms and it was on PBS and the guys said they got the idea from the Spidey comic book. I don't know how far it went though. It was being used for handing dangerous materials.and it was a glass booth and the guy stood outsideand stuck his arms into gloves built into the wall and the harness was attached to his torso and legs.
